Sutherland defeated favourite Elphinstone 2-1 in the North Shore - Howe Sound zone final (13-15, 15- 5, 15-1) to earn the berth. However, Elphinstone will still have a chance at ‘the provincial title as the school is hosting the championships in Gibson Nov. 25 to 27. The Sabres finished the ZONE» “playoffs with a perfect 5-0 Srecord, followed by Elpltinstone (4-1), West Vancouver (3-2), Sentinel (2- 3), St. Thomas Aquinas (1-4) . and Seycove (0-5). The B.C. berth was a well- deserved triumph for the _Sutherland girls, _ ‘finished the regular North Shore season as the top “A” school and third overall. They still have a chance at the North Shore title, with semi-finals held Monday and the final slated for Thursday night at 7 p.m. Location of the final depends on the outcome of the semi between number one Handsworth (9-0) and fourth place Argyle (6-3), with the final scheduled at the winning school. Sutherland faced second place Hillside (8-1) in its semi fina! (game results not who, available at time). The senior girls completed regular season play last week. Monday, Nov. 8 scores were: Argyle 3, St. Thomas Aquinas 1; Sentinel 3, Howe Sound 0; Hillside 3, Sutherland 2; Carson Graham 3, West Vancouver 2. Losing their opener 7-15 in the Wednesday best-of-five, the Sabres came back 15-10, 15-10, 15-8 to eam the league crown. In semi-final play Mon- day, Nov. 8, Sutherland downed Seycove 3-1 (15-13, 4-15, 15-13, 15-8) and the Red Eagles blitzed West Vancouver 3-0 (15-7, 15-12, 15-5). Finals were also held at the junior, juvenile and bantam levels in volleyball last week, with Sentinel capturing two of the younger titles. The Spartans eaned both the juvenile and bantam titles Tuesday, Nov. 9, overpowering Argyle 3-1 for the juvenile crown (15-9, 12- 15, 15-9, 15-12) and West Vancouver 3-0 for the bantam championship (15-8, 15-13, 15-8). The junior final went to West Vancouver. The Highlanders downed Seycoye 3-1 Wednesday, taking the championship 15- 12, 15-17, 15-11 and 15-9. In the junior semi-finals held Monday, Nov. 8, West Vancouver defeated Baimoral 3-0 (15-7, 15-0, 15- 9) and Seycove squeaked past Sentinel for (14-16, 15-5, 5-15, 15-9, 15- 9). While the season is over now for the intermediate teams (the North Shore team has the only league in the age group), the juvenile and junior champions have the Vancouver ° District championships to look forward to. Today (Wednesday), the Sentinel juvenile squad takes part in the V&D playoffs in New Westminster, while the junior champs, West Van, take the big trip east to New West tomorrow. Pipers a soggy success THEY may be a bit wet behind the ears, but there's no stopping the Argyle swim team. The Pipers proved their pool supremacy on the weekend, defending their North Shore title suc- cessfully and easily. The senior high school event, held Sunday at Ron Andrews pool, saw Argyle finish will out in front with a grand aggregate total of 168 points. Windsor placed second with 146, followed by Hansworth (127), Sentinel and St. Thomas More (114 each), Seycove (106), Carson Graham (80), Burnaby North (49), Burnaby South (23), Edmonds (13) and Alpha (12). Three records broken at the meet -- the same team. Dianne Ford, were two by Michelle Green, Ellen D’Auria and Elaine Prescott broke the records in the 400 metre freestyle relay (4:51.3 vs 4:53.7 set in 1978) and 200 m IM relay (2:22.4 vs 2:25.4 set in 1977). The Handsworth girls made up the “B” team, and do not swim year-round for a club. Rod Archibald trimmed nearly two seconds off the 200 m IM “A”, finishing in 2:12.7, well under the 1980 mark of 2:14.4.
