year for sprucing up your
home inside and out. Take
advantage of the long cool
days and get projects out of
the way before the lazy days
of summer arrive.

If, for example, you have
a home made of natural
wood which has never been
painted, you may want to
give it a coat of protective
stain. According to Minwax
Co., a manufacturer of wood
finishing products, natural
wood homes require a little
special care. To keep wood
looking beautiful, it has to

be protected against the-

wilds of weather and wear.

If your wood home is new
and has never been given a
coat of protective stain, or if
it's been several years since
it was last done, this may be
the year to consider it. Take
an objective look at the
outside of your house and
don't forget to include
decks, railing, fencing, even
outdoor furniture. Does the
wood look a little gray and
faded, a little “the worse for
wear?”

If you have a little bit of
the do-it-yourselfer in you,
you can casily give new life
to your wood home with no
expense other than what you

and crack and fungus can
result in rotted, decayed
wood.

Pick a day for applying the
finish that is clear and warm,
but not too hot. Before
applying an exterior wood
finish, make sure the wood is
clean and dry. Then use
either a brush, roller or
sprayer, depending on the
texture and type of siding.
Rollers work well on smooth
surfaces, brushes are better
for shakes and clapboards.
Start at the top of the house
and work down. Careful
application cnsures that the
finish will seal every crack
and crevice in the wood.

If you take a_ break,
choose a good stopping point
such as a corner of the
house, a door frame or
window. This will help
eliminate the chance of lap
marks when you start in
again.

Unless your house ts
extremely large or has an
unusual shape that will
involve moving the ladder a
lot, you can probably finish
your house jn one long
weekend. And think of the
bencfits of doing it yourself
— not only does it save you a
lot of moncy, but nothing
equals the fecling of
satisfaction and sense of
pride when you step back to
admire your handiwork and
think “I did 1 myself!”
