Though many people will remember thelr fathers with gilts, sometimes a piggyback ride will do just as well, as young Danc and his father Ken would surely agree.(Elisworth Dickson photo) The emphasis in women’s fashion today is on fitness and «trimness. And those women who don’t quite fit .the image of the slim, athletic model are subtlety pressured to conform, both for the sake of their health — and their appearance. But there are many women for whom the thin, fit look is unattainable at present. One of the major obstacles confronting these women is the difficulty they have in finding clothing for larger women that is both stylish and attractive. Large as Life is a group of women whose objective is to make such clothing more easily available in the Lower Mainland and in B.C. in general. The making of presentable clothing ac- cessible to larger women is” part of a greater program to encourage these women to be accepting of themselves, -since self-acceptance is “essential not only for ef- fective weight-reduction, but’ also for basic psychological good health. Another objective of Large As Life is to educate the public about fat people, namely that discrimination against them exists in the areas of clothing, job and image, and that this dis- crimination is based on the misconception that being fat is simply the result of Weak- will and _ self-indulgence. That fact is that obesity is a chronic physical problem with no easy solutions based on will-power.
