That was in September and in December I left what I considered to be a womb- like position ... “I had my business cards printed and I had my stationery printed — and | worked out of the back of my car. Whenever anyone third on personality. “No matter how efficient you are, no matter how . effective you are, no matter ~. how ready you are to do anything they want you to do, if you don’t know what you're doing, don't bother. Do what you do and do it well. Hone it, polish it, make ~ it work for you.” But Gold also believes . that self-esteem is essential to success and self-esteem, she says, comes from a sense of accomplishment. “We all have our peaks .: and our valleys — but don't - you feel sorry for someone who has never peaked? Someone who has never gone home at the end of the day and been able to say, asked how I was doing, I said ‘Wonderful!’ When they asked, how’s business, I said ‘Great! aN She had three contracts when she started out and in the first year on her own, made $5,000 more than she had the year before. “That encouraged me to know that I could do it and to know that I would doit.” But Gold said what perpetuated her career success was . product knowledge and “the tenacity to stick with it when you feel devastated. And there are those days when you do feel devastated.” - Gold believes that two- thirds of what you do is based on your craft-prodnct knowledge — and the other because of my determination and my effort, this hap- pened.” It is the peaks, she says, that get us through the days we feel devastated. And, she says, discouragement is the devil's greatest weapon. “It is our responsibility not to allow discouragement to set in and one of the ways we do that is by our winning at- titude.” Being successful is not easy. (UPI) - A man convicted under California's new spousal rape law was sentenced to 16 years in prison for farcing his teen-age wife to have sex in a stolen recreational vehicle. Frank Martinez of nearby El Monte was sentenced recently on 13 counts in- cluding rape, kidnapping, forcible oral copulation, auto theft and four counts of spousal rape. It was one of the first convictions under the state's aew marital rape statute. Martinez was arrested last Jan. 7 on charges of raping his 18-year-old = estranged wife and oa = 19-year-old saleswoman for a recreational! vehicle dealership.
