Not all doctors: Dear Editor: We must take exception to the impression given in the Vancouver Sun _ article “Doctors Sign Up Against Pro-Life Takeover”, that 100 per cent of Doctors dre in favor of abortion. There are every bit as many doctors opposed to abortion as there are for it. It seems to be a con- tradiction, that abortions, presumably done to preserve the health or life of the woman, are increasing proportionately with the LGH should respond progress and sophistication of medical treatment. As to contraceptive education being the solution to prevention of abortion, the Badgley Report states that 84.8% of women having abortions were’ con- traceptively experienced. Members of the com- munity, who, in conscience feel that they cannot stand by silently while their tax dollars are being spent in violating the right to life, have every right as citizens of the community, to elect favor abortions members to the hospital board who have the same philosophy. Also, may we state that the legal protection of the right to life of innocent human beings is not simply a “single issue”. It is the Basic Issue — upon which all other issues of human rights and justice depend. Walter J. Kazum, M.D. Stanley Croft, M.D. Peter C. Quelch, M.D. Ivan Nohel, M.D. to the entire community Dear Editor: The annual confrontation between pro-choice and pro- life advocates is shaping up with the approach of the Lions Gate Hospital annual meeting scheduled for September 17. It is vital that we protect a community resource as important to our welfare as the Lions Gate Hospital abortion facility. Help is needed in the efforts to defend the status quo at the hospital. The hospital's function ts to provide facilities for medica] procedures which are accepted as legal and ethical ty the medical profession. Not only are pro-lifers costing the hospital time and money in challenging just one of the many treatments done at Lions Gate Hospital, their persistence in Carrying a basically political fight into a basically non-political arena forces a reaction from people who believe that hospitals should continue to do their jobs; and _ that abortion is a difficult choice which should be a matter between a woman and .-her doctor. As the law stands, LGH is trying to do its job. Let us make sure they are allowed to continue doing so — responding to the full medical needs of the whole community and not to the lobbying efforts of a vocal, well organized minority group such as pro-lifers. The cut off for mem- bership is set one month before the annual general meeting, bul we urge you to submit your membership fee of $6.00 for new members before the end of July to ensure that your fees are received and processed on tame.
