The automotive ‘Standard of the World" began. as a single-cylinder car selling for $750. Henry M. Leland, its creator, had been associated with Henry Ford, and had built engines for Oldsmobile. The Model ‘A’ Cadillac was, in fact, quite similar to early Fords, with a horizontal underfloor engine, 2-speed planetary transmission, and central chain drive via a spur-type differential; but Cadillac’s 98.1 ci inlet over exhaust power had: only one cylinder, whereas’ Ford employed two. Early models had no hood. This highly successful design remained in production till 1908; later improyements including rack-and-pinion steering, suspension, and a dummy - " Swedish Johansson gauges to transverse front hood. The car was in- troduced to Britain by F.S. Bennett, who conducted a ‘standardization test’ at Brooklands in 1908. Three cars -were dismantled and the parts mixed up. Each was then re- assembled, and run on the track, an achievement whith prompted the Royal Automobile Club to award Cadillac the Dewer Trohy. Such accurate in- terchangeability of parts was a major selling point for the American market, guaranteed by Leland’s importation of the first be used in that country. A 30 hp 4-cylinder car with separate cylinders and copper water jackets was unveiled in 1906. 75,000 models were sold before it was discontinued in 1914. The original planetary ‘transmission first gave way to a conventional 3-speed and, in 1914, to that unit linked a 2-speed back axle. In 1909, Cadillac became one of the firms organized into. the General Motors group by W.C. Durant, but Leland remained in charge. At that time, the General Motors stable included Buick, Oakland, and Old- smobile. The latter was the most expensive and Cadillac and Buick cost the least. By DETROIT (UPI) - Strong early January sales by General Motors Corp., American Motors Co., and Volkswagen of America gave the domestic industry an unexpected boost in its initial 1980 sales period. But despite: the relatively good performance in the first part of January, auto executives said it was too early to predict an upward sales trend that could provide relief for more than 200,000 auto workers who have been laid off. Combined sales reports issued Tuesday by the five domestic automakers showed 160,000 cars were sold in the first 10 days of January; only 4.4 per cent fewer than in the same period last year. Those figures contrast with six months of dismal sales reports that oc- casionally dipped more than FREE BRAKE INSPECTION PREVENT EXPENSIVE BRAKE REPAIRS GET A FREE BRAKE INSPECTION TODAY!!!
