Tiberio Faedo’s excellent La Cucina (986-1334) in North Vancouver was brightened inside and out. Its outdoor patio was also expanded, Its menu, even with the departure of long-time La Cucina chef Hans-Peter Roth, remains first-rate. And Kypriaki’s (925-7955) Mediterranean mural, now com- plete. qualifies as the most colorful North Shore restaurant exterior for ‘95. eo¢ Outlooks deserving ovations: Though its interior is in need of a tummy tuck and facelift, the Grouse Nest (984-0661) qualifies as the restaurant with the best exte- rior panoramic outlook of the North Shore and the rest of the Lower Mainland. Not far behind in the outlook category and way ahead in the showcasing of West Coast cuisine is the Salmon House on the Hill (926-3212). The House hosted, for the sec- ond year running, the Lower Mainland salmon festival, which kicks off a month of salnon-relited festivities in various focal restau- rants. oF Hottest Chicken Addition: The fun-loving South African folk behind the internationally renowned Nando's Chickenland chain moved into 1301 Lonsdale Ave. to launch the second Nando’s in the Lower Mainland (990-1530). It features platters of peppery flame-grilled chicken doused in fiery Portuguese Peri-Peri sauce. Recommended for those who have a hankering for chicken tonight but with some South African soul. oe¢ Most Welcome Culinary Additions: The arrival of genuine Thai food on the North Shore was cause for much local gastronomic celebra- tion. Its first purveyor was the com- pact and high quality Krua Thai (990-9349) at 1445 Lonsdale. The Krua Tnai was followed Sater in the year by the Thai Palace (987- 2009), which moved into the vacat- ed Scallini pasta bar at 157 Chadwick Crt. It, too, is excellent. Two Thais, two wins. Other excellent additions to the North Shore dining scene: the Village Bistro (980-5535), which brought good quality Italian food to Edgemont Village. Pepino (988-4462), which has established a beach head of culi- nary excellence in Lynn Valley.
