2 - Friday, October 20, 1989 - North Shore News Howe Sound pulp mill firms face multiple suits From page 1 to monitor and regulate and pre- vent the emission of effluent that is harmful to fish; © failed to prevent unlawful en- vironmental degradation to the fishery; © repeatedly failed to observe provincial pollution standards; ® and repe>tedly failed to observe federal poiiution standards and thereby contributed to the toxicity of fisheries and their resultant closure. The suit states that the recent fisheries closures are indefinite and will likely be permanent. Named as plaintiffs in the suit are North Vancouver commercial fisherman Bruce Adams, Bowen Island commercial fisherman David Macintosh, Sechelt com- mercial fisherman Andre Alarie and Squamish commercial fish- erman and fish retailer Charles MacMillan. All four regularly fished prawns, shrimp and crab from Howe Sound prior to the fishery closures. Their suit is the second this year to be launched against the mill op- erators by fishermen seeking com- pensation through the courts for loss of livelihood. On Aug. 9, crab fisherman Danny Garland Gagnier of Gib- sons and the Hope Point Fishing Co. filed a B.C. Supreme Court suit against the mills’ owners alleg- ing the excessive pollution in Howe Sound resulted from their negligence. And in early November, lawyers for West Vancouver’s Terry Jacks, the founder of Environmental Watch, will appear in court to set a trial date in Jacks’ B.C. Supreme Court civil action against the pro- vincial government over its deci- sion to approve a revised air pollu- tion permit for the Port Mellon pulp mill. Jacks said all three suits were initiated by Environmental Watch after lobbying four different pro- vincial environment ministers over the past four years and still being “unsuccessful in getting existing pollution laws enforced.”’ TENDER VITTLES cat food 4 flavours to choose from Fuji colour films reg. 3.99 49 i i reg. 2. 39 Ziperzate ii A ae Wen! ath. washer Saat 199 Prices in effect Saturday & freeze 2 L* 29 and cpenings up oo te aa? 42". reg. 39.989 SALE FLEETWOOD roast beef reg. 1.15/100z Limit 800g per customer SALE PUREX ) a bathroom TISSUC 6 cor. 2.0y res: 3.59 Limit 2 per customer pampers — disposable diapers Smail-medium, large & large + reg. 11.77 Limit 2 per customer fi Kena Skin cream 15Cmi + 30mL bonus Limit 2 per customsr reg. 4.29 Good | fo: 35°C — A 4 litre reg. 2.09. ase und, detergen 7.99 only. 10 Litres, reg. | WABASSO 3-pce. owe! set reg. 12.96 SALE | Soft white lightbulbs | 4-Pk. 40, 60 & 100W reg. 4.58 Lknit 2 per customer i chicken strip strip "999 latter iaServed with fries & garnish Saturday 9 am te 6 pm greg. 3.99 Sunday 11 am to 5 pm Limit 1 per customer 2A rice SALE We reserve the right to limit quantities Wolo Price is just beginning.
