came out on Tuesday and

What's the point? At the
end of the day the photo
credit still goes to an image
tank. The effect seems little
more than a marketing ploy
that takes away from the
music. But not for long.

‘The sound of Philadelphia
indced. Favoured sons Kenny
Gamibic and Leon Huff
received their dues at the
Graramics on Wednesday
night and the Roots pay their
respect in kind. Most songs
went through Sigma Studios
at some point and one cut is
dedicated to the legendary
preduction team.

Lengthy liner notes keep
track of the anarchic record-
ing process — “Table of
Contents” has a wrong vocal
mistakenly mixed in. The
Roots’ extended family of
musicians amounts to a cast
of thousands: Erykah Badu
adds her touch to the sublime
“You Gor Mc”, D’Ang sclo
appears on “Tne Spark” and
the nasty genius of rapper
Schooly’D is at the heart of
“Without a Doube”.

The Roots have a repvta-
tion as onc of the best live
acts in hip-hop, They bring
their two hour-plus show to
Seattle on Wednesday, March
3 for an evening at the
Phenix Underground.

The first dise Isseehar was
recorded with Mark Feldman
(violin), Erik Friedlander
(cello) and Greg Cohen
(bass). The trio are joined on
the second dise by Mare
Ribot (guitar), Cyro Baptista
(percussion) and Joey Baron
{drums) to make up the Bar
Kokhba Sextet.

The sessions were record-
ed over a pvo-day period in
December of 1997, Zorn
wrote all the music but docs-
