The 27-year-old heroin addict went AWOL on April 29 after only a few minutes of residency at a Burnaby drug recovery centre for convicts called Luke 15 House. Reitan was arrested on May 1, two days after he received a conditional sen- tence from North Vancouver Judge According to the North Vancouver RCMP, Reitan was picked up on May 1 ina base- ment suite in the 700-block of East 4th Street. He should have been at the drug Tecovery centre under court order. During a hearing on June 24, Judge Dicbolt: appeared hopeful that Rettan could still change his lite around. “You moved me to the (conditional sentence) order y what seemed to be a sin- cere desire to beat a drug habit,” said Diebolt. “I think you are not con- vineed you have hit the bor- tom vet. T can't image there is much bottom left.” On April 29, Dicbolt went to great lengths to ensure that Luke 15 was an appropriate place for Reitan. Two men who ran the centre came to court and assured the judge. Reitan was charged with the Harbor Avenue burglary afters burglary section Mounties spotted Reitan and his girlfriend take two com- puters into an East Hastings pawn shop. In the March 13 Money Mart incident, the Crown information indicated that Reitan took cheques out of his father’s house to use in the crime. The amount of moncy illegally obtained was $1,988. Reitan’s lawyer Peter Roberts said at the April sen- tencing that his client had been trying to break a heroin habit for five years. Roberts noted thet Reitan’s family were supportive. Reitan’s grandmother wrote a state- ment describing Reitan as a person with good qualities who was kind to children. The judge warned Reitan that Diebolt’s conditional sentence did come with a “strike two or three.” “For all che people thar think you are going to breach, prove them wrong. Nothing pleases me more that to see somebody for the last time,” said Diebolt in April. Reitan has been in jail since his May 1 arrest for the conditional sentence breach.
