Starts
on rise

February to a seasonal-
ly adjusted annual rate
of 158,900 units,
reports Canada

The estimate for starts in rural
areas remained unchanged at
24,800.

British Columbia urban
starts reached 26,800 units in
February, 2 40.3% increase over
the previous month.

Single starts were up, but
most of the increase was in
muldples which benefited from
more construction in condo-
minium units. Vancouver starts
rose 19.4%,

Urban activity in the
Prairies rose 21.5%. Strong
construction in Calgary pushed
Alberta starts up 24.9% to
