(well, let’s come right out and say
it, until Christie) had to take the
briefcase in to get its clasp
repaired, and forgot to check all
the pockets...

You can guess the rest. I got a
frantic call at work; the repairman
had seen the photo and I had to
drive out to Surrey to pick up the
briefcase for her because she
couldn't face him and was never
going into the shop again, etc.

I couldn’t get on my white
horse as I had a business meeiing
to attend, but I understand that
Christie eventually managed to
find someone, or paid someone,
to collect the briefcase for her.

She has since burnt the photos.

My point is, you may wish to
consider making bookmarks of
the pressed flower variety.

When it comes to wrapping
your gifts, be imaginative, not ex-
travagant.

There’s nothing wrong with us-
ing the weekend comics. Or dec-
orating brown paper or other
blank paper with children’s
stamps or potato prints.

Tea towels, baskets or reusable
containers can serve both as gift
wrap and as part of the gif.

Instead of a bow, or for the gift
itself, make the recipient a tree
decoration. This child-friendly
project was recommended in this
month’s Vancouver Parent
hewsmagazine:

Mix powder paint or focd col-
oring with two cups of flour and
one cup of salt. Add one table-
spoon of cooking oil and one cup
of water, then knead.

Roll and cut out shapes with
Christmas cookie cutters. Use a
drinking straw to punch out a
hole far enough from the edge
that it won'l tear when hung by
ribbon or wool.

Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.
When cool, add glitter or paint as
desir

Other tree decorations for your
“ home can include popcorn chains
and cranberry wreaths.

Thread day-old popcorn onto
heavy thread or dental floss, ad-
ding in cranberrries or raisins if
desired.

To make cranberry wreaths,
string 10 to 15 cranberries on a
foot-long thread and tie the two
ends together. The resulting
wreath can be hung over the ends
of your evergreen branches.

Popcorn strings and cranberry
wreaths can be left on your
Christmas tree and set out for the
birds after Christmas, if you wish.

Once the birds have had their
treat, either use the boughs in
your garden to shield other plants
from snow and cold, or watch the
North Shore News for informa-
tion on the time and location of
local chip-ups.
