Stones alone Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards solo Lions Gate Hospital installs ONNIE WOOD steps out without - Stones; Keith Richards proves to be a ‘primal rock force. Ronnie Wood & 80 Diddley — Live At The Ritz, Victory Music/PalyGram 1992 if you are curious about Ronnie rolling without the Stones, this is the one to pick up if a choice is to be made. The live set was recorded in 1987 at the Ritz in New York. __ Most of it is Bo’s material — Crackin’ Up, Who Do You Love, I’m A Man. The colléztion opens with a rough version of Road Runner, the classic Bo Diddley tune that groups like the Sex Pistols cut milk teeth on. . Ronnie’s slide riffs mix it up fine with Bo’s loopy rhythmic drive. The band rips through a version of Honky Tonk Women, and Faces material gets a nod and a wink with a cover of Ooh La La Song. The whole thing has the feel of a bona fide mutual celebration of an old friendship played out on the common turf of glory days vintage rock ‘n’ roll. Ronnie Wood — Slide On This, Continuum Records 1992 This one is weakened by incon- sistency. Wood as a soloist is reaching for a new voice. There are plenty of guests to bolster the quest — Charlie Watts, Hothouse Flowers, U2’s The Edge inclusive — but despite the backing, a lot of it smacks of self-conscious calculated diversity. That's not to discount a few choice songs. A ragged-edged funk foray comes together on a cover of the Parliament song, | just Want Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW To Testity. Wood skips a well-aimed rock across the Stones stream with Josephine. Unexpectedly, sketches incor- porated into the packaging ¢ of this CD and the Wood-Bo Diddley release show the guitarist to be an able portrait artist. Catch Wood in a rare live ap- pearance on Nov. 24 at the Commodore. Keith Richards —- Main Of- fender, Virgin Records 1992 Rock's quintessential ravaged man is back. The combined pro- duction work of Richards, Steve Jordan and Waddy Wachtel results in a kind of doggedly spartan sense powering the whole here. Main Offender is not a simple repeat of the 1988 debut soio ef- fort Talk Is Cheap. The production on this one is stripped down and cranked up to bring Richards’ abused voice and abusive guitar licks right up front. Save for the odd reggae excur- sion, this is rigidly unadorned Chuck Berry gone through the R&B blender. Keith doesn’t mess with his primal routs, and it seems his fans like it that way, thank you very much.
