ee Long-time handyman turned TV. host offers advice to do-it-yourselfers MICHAEL HAMMAR says he has been a handyman since he was a kid. He. proudly claims he learned many of his how-to tricks from his grandfather, who earned many a dollar with his skills in woodworking and repairs. As a young adult, Hammar took his first job in the lumber business. Although his job was keeping the company books he found himself working in the woodwerking mill-> Through the next 18 years, Hammar soaked up all the know- ledge he could about home repairs and do-it-yourself projects. Since 1952, Hammar has built his own home, helped with numerous renovations and restorations and taught dozens of courses at home centres and regional colleges. Then in 1971, his first opportu- nity to pass his knowledge on, via the mass media, was presented to him. Canada’s, and possibly North America’s, first call-in radio show on home repairs went on the air with Hammar as its host. He is still hosting his own call- in radio show in Ontario, but now with a co-host, his son Jim who is a home improvement expert in his own right. . Hammar’s first opportunity to appear in a regular television show came in September 1996. He ap- peared monthly on a live after- noon show in Ontario. In 1978, Hammar went on stage at a do-it-yourself show in Toronto with live how-to demonstrations. Since then he has appeared in such major cities as Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, ‘Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ot- tawa, Moncton and Halifax. Toronto Hydro featured Ham- mar in The Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto in 1982. in the samie year The Viny! Council featured Hammar in Home Ex- pressions in Winnipeg and the Na- tional Home Show in Toronto. _ 4987 through 1989 Hammar was retained by the Denex Group, to headline their shows in Moncton . and Halifax. B & B RENTALS Rentals, Sales, ‘Custom Fabrication & Repairs Southex Exhibitions retained Hammar as a feature for the Spring National Home Show in Toronto in 1989. As well, in the: spring, he appeared in shows in Ottawa and Niagara Falls. Hammar entered the °90s with I} home show appearances. In the spring, sponsored by one of On- tario’s most progressive retailers, he appeared in the Metro Home Show throughout that prevince. In the fall of 1990, he was at the Fall National Home Show in Toronto. 1991 was a busy year for Hammar with appearances in nine home shows in Canada from Ot- tawa to Calgary. In 1692 Hammar opened the year’s schedule in the Renovation Show in Ottawa and the Metro Home Show ia Toronto in January and appeared ia Home Expressions in Winnipeg and the International Home & Garden Show in Mississauga in March; then Regina, Ottawa and St. Catherines in April. Hammar also appeared, or will appear in Ottawa, Abbotsford, Winnipeg, Mississauga, and Van- couver this fall. A year ago, Hammar launched his first television series Don’t Move — Improve. tt is a home renovation series, cach week on over 100 stations across Canada and js seen in every province.
