a Photo submitted ISLAND RECORDS’ new compilation makes a great introduction B to what the Pogues have been up to in recent years. Shane ‘MaeGowan (far right) left the band this year and was replaced by Joe Strummer. Kiss my glass Island release a best of | while the Pogues play on "= QGUE'S PAST repiaved; Sound- ‘garden grows; Ca- | nadian rock re-issued; _ Public Enemy strikes back. '. Pogues — Essential, Island Re- cords 1991 Shed a tear for the passage of Shane MacGowan from the ranks of the Pogues as you contemplate’ the darkness between you and the bottom of the mug of stout in your hand. The rubber-faced frontman with the indecipherable mumble and the horrific teeth seems to be his- tory thanks to the devil in the bot- tle. Clashman Joe Strummer as replacement generates sufficient spark live but as this retrospective be.rs out, it is ultimately the rewarding combination of the caustic and the sentimental in the songs penned by MacGowan that propels the Pogues into a league of their own, The title “Essential’’ is ques- tionable. The compilation covers only the work released on tsland Records and is padded with some decidedly non-essential tracks — the long version of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, and Hanky Tonk Woman inclusive. Much that is essential about this band came before. . Buy the disc for someone you'd like to introduce the Pogues to. if you've been following the band faithfully, you already have the essentials. Soundgarden — Badmotorf- inger, A&M Records 1991 The Seattle-seeded Soundgarden is = fertile field flush with cryptic, apocalyptic lyrics, low, loud, fuzz-busting guitars and pummell- ing percussion. Chris Cornell's lacerating screams punctuate the band’s complex rhythmic machinations and kick the jam into some fierce- ly metallic moments. No neophytes when it comes to whipping up the hype, Soun- dgarden are in hot holy water over the video supporting Jesus Christ Pose. Christians of ail stripes are angry over the bombastic crucitix- ion images flashed. Gratuitous controversy aside, Michael Becker : RECORD REVIEW Badmotorfinger plays out with in- spired heaviness. This music has _ hedonic heft. Various Artists — Made In Canada, Our Rock N’ Roll History, BMG 1991 This wide-ranging collection hit the street last year as a three- volume affair. Radio-tested Cancon culture is revealed to be primarily a parade of copycat musicians who manag- ed to sound like they were part of something happening south of the boarder or across the water in England. . But this collection is broad enough — 69 cuts spanning the ‘years 1950 to 1974 — to scoop up some memorable Canuck original- ity. More of the old is made new again with the release of an addi- tional volume — Vol. Four, More Great Stuff. And so the blasts from our nor- thern past include the Jesus sock of Ocean (Put Your Hand In The Hand); Terry Jacks (Seasons In The Sun); Chilliwack (Lonesome Mary). Stack those up with some of the best found on the other volumes — Jackie Shane’s fine 1963 R&B number Any Other Way, David Clayton-7 homas and the Bossmen howling raw on 1966's Brain- washed -— and with the magic programming button on your CD player, you can set yourself a satis- iying maple-leaf-wrapped time- trave} trip down the Trans-Canada of your mind.
