The spirit reworked for modern
context is inspired by the music
made 400 to 560 years ago. And
so the feel ranges freely trom the
celebratory and pastoral to the
sonorous and gothic.

What is so remarkable about the
work here is haw timelessly right it
sounds and how naturaliy it fits in-
to the progressive body of music
being made by worldbeat
iconoclasts who are choosing to
explore and integrate disparate
styles of musical expression to
create something strangely new.

This music is rife with moody
thrill and chill.

BOHO BEAT poet Michael Mc-
Clure, attributed as an inspiration
for dead Doors headman Jim Mor-
rison, appears with Doors alumni
Ray Manzarek 8 p.m., Dec. 2 at
the Fabulous Commodore.

McClure’s published list includes
The Beard, Gorf, Fragments of
Perseus and historical essays,
Scratching the Beat Surface. Those
who may not have read the stuff
will have heard a taste of his
songwriting — he wrote Mercedes
Benz, recorded by gal pal Janice
Joplin.

Unpublished work by Mr. Mor-
rison is on the agenda for the tocal
performance as well.

FOOTBALL FIENDS Hungry for
Kicks will be looking for a Good
Thing Nov. 23 at the 1990 Miss
Grey Cup Festivities in the Hyatt
Regency ballroom in Vancouver.

Just imagine, ‘60s pop phenom-
enon Paul Revere and the newly
crowned Miss Grey Cup ‘90 in one
room at the same time with adre-
naline-pumped pigskin fans.

The night of dinner and dancing
begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $75
per person with net proceeds go-
ing to The Orphans’ Fund. Tickets

COMPUTER-LINKED electronic
wind instruments will be featured
in a work composed by a member
of Simon Fraser University’s
School for the Contemporary Arts.
Martin Bartlett, a professor and
composer specializing in elec-
tronic computer music, will be
presenting Pythagoras’ Ghost as
part of a free concert of music by
SFU faculty composers, at 7:45
p.m., Thursday Dec. 6 in the Flet-
cher Challenge Theatre at the
Harbor Centre SFU campus.

Said Bartlett, ‘‘Legend has it
that Pythagoras discovered
musical intervals by listening to
blacksmiths pounding metal. His
mathematical studies were based
on the idea that the universe was
governed by a system of musical
vibrations — and ke was not alone
in this belief. Throughout history,
there has been a Pythagoreanist
notion of proportion in the tuning
of the earth and heavens.”
