EN 928-S0r3 Tune up your body DID YOU ever find the ski run that you’ve been dreaming of, only to find you have to stop three or four times because of the burning in your legs or lungs as a skier twice your age glides by effortlessly? “Next year,” you gasp, ‘‘next year this wan’t happen.”’ Weil, next year is now, and are you ready for that run you prom- ised yourself? Help is on its way! With ski season lasting six or seven months, it’s never too late to start. Here's a brief tune up on how best to prepare and maintain yourself for the best ski season ever. Skiing is a recreation that in- volves energy expenditures in short periods of time and hence, conditioning should be specific to that time frame. After all, we always get a rest on the ride back up the hill and it would be silly, for example, to train at long distance running tor two to five minute intervals «+ downhill skiing, which is primaiily non-aerobic stamina! So, what do you do if you have six weeks to get in decent shape for the season? First of all, you'll be glad to know that you don't need to abuse yourself to achieve results. Be specific, consistent and vary the program so you enjoy the workouts as much as the end results. Before embarking on this phys- ical venture consult your doctor to ensure you have the OK. And get a fitness assessment to further educate, motivate and provide you with a clear picture of where you are now and where you need to go to in order to reach your goals. It may also be wise to discuss your needs with a consultant for safety and technique.
