By PAMELA LANG Contributing Writer The area to be considered for dedication will be Loutet Park on Rufus Avenue and may include the area ‘‘lying between Wiliam Avenue and Rufus Avenue and be- tween the lane north of 17th Street and the Trans Canada Highway," according to the resolution passed by city council Monday night. “The latter area,’’ the resolution states, ‘‘is a passive area contain- ing a well-established forest of co- niferous trees, paths and interest- ing fauna a d as such is a natural extension to Loutet Park which will assist in also providing a con- tinuous green strip link to Green- wood Park.”’ Loutet Park was designated as a park through a 1961 resolution of council, but the dedication can be altered by a fuiure council unless council polls the city’s residents and officially dedicates the park. Several city aldermen were sur- prised that Loutet Park was not dedicated, and Ald. Stella Jo Dean suggested that council should move to dedicate any other parks not currently dedicated. “We have to protect, by dedica- tion, the green areas that we have,” she said. Council deferred to June 25 a decision to extend the park to William Avenue, and requested snore infermation from staff on the extension. But Ald. Frank Morris vehemently opposed the deferral, saying that more study of the area was ‘‘useless.’’ He said the forested area adja- cent to Loutet Park is one of seven coniferous tree stands left in the city, and the only one not zoned as parkland. Morris also pointed out that a public meeting some years ago showed public support of the area's parkland designation. Development of the area, he said, would cause the loss of most or all of the trees and would ignore its ‘‘environmenta! importance."” Because North Vancouver City is one of the most densely popu- lated areas in the Lower Mainland, green areas should be saved, he added. Ald. Dean agreed that because of increasing city density, the need for trees and trails is increasingly S important, especially for the apartment dwellers who have no lawns or yards. “We need these quiet places,"’ she said. But Ald. Bill Bel! supported the deferral saying that while he would Probably support the park exten- sion, he wants all of the facts be- fore him before doing so. Aldermen Barbara Sharp and John Braithwaite and Mayor Jack Loucks echoed support in principle for the extended park, but agreed that more information was needed.
