a Gas station blaze contained QUICK ACTION on the part of a gas station attendant and West Vancouver firefighters saved the day when fire struck at the Chevron gas station located at 16th and Marine Friday morning. According to a West Vancouver Fire Department spokesman, a driver had pulled up to the station to buy a pack of cigarettes. The driver left his van running. While inside the station store the driverless van reversed and struck a gas pump island. The station attendant saw the van rolling and promptly cut the power to the pumps. But one pump was knocked out by the van. Fuel ignited, burning the pump and the van. Firefighters applied foam to smother the flames within minutes. NV man jailed for five days A 21-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced to five days in jail and fined $500 after he pleaded guilty to failing to ap- pear for a scheduled court date and possessing a narcotic. Robert James Sharpe was originally charged in connection with a Dec. 27, 1989 incident in which he failed to appear for a scheduled court date. He had been previously charged with possession of cannabis resin in connection with an Aug. 31, 1989 drug seizure. N. The West Vancouver Police Department i is recruiting members for its police reserves, an auxiliary unit providing assistance to the regular force. Reserve members accompany regular police members on weekend and evening patrols and provide backup on special occa- sions. Applicants must be Canadian citizens with Grade 12 education or equivalent and must be in good physical condition. Henry Indra, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 922-4141, NV man fined for tax evasion A 58-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was fined $15,484 Jan. 12 in Nosth Vancouver provincial court after he pleaded guilty to four counts of making false statements un his income tax returns. Peter Abel was charged after he failed to report $149,301.72 in personal income during the taxation years 1983 through to 1986. Abel, a computer instructor at BCIT, was charged after he failed to report royalties he received as the author of computer textbooks written for companies in the United States. A stay of proceedings was entered in a fifth charge which alleged that Abel had failed to declare $46,472.51 on his income tax return for the 1982 taxation year. Abel has already paid $191,656.57 in taxes and penalties related to the $46,453.74 in taxes owed on the undeclared royalties and other matters not dealt with in the North Vancouver provincial court trial. 5 - Sunday.
