129,000 INFANT CARRIERS Car seats fail test THE B.C. Automobile Associa- tion, in co-operation with Trans- port Canada, is issuing a public notice affecting 129,397 car seats sold in Camada between March 1, 1985 and February 1, 1989. BCAA and Transport Canada are warning owners of the popular Dyn-O-Mite and Evenflo infant car seats, both manufactured by the Evenflo Juvenile Furniture Co. that these seats do not comply with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for infant carriers. car seats were found to exceed the maximum 70 degree seat back angle allowable under the standard when used in their most reclined position with only en automobile lap belt to secure the restraint. The purpose of the 70 degree maximum angle is to reduce the possibility of a child being ejected out of the top of the carrier in a frontal collision. All other recline positions mee? the safety standards when installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The installation instructions originally provided by Evenflo stated the seats could “‘be used in all recline positions as a: oar-facing restraint in cars.’’ The company is now taking corrective action by is- suing warning labels to be attached to all Dyn-O-Mite and Evenfio in- fant car seats informing consumers not to use the restraint in its most reclined position in the car when attached by only the vebicle’s lap It. Owners of Dyn-O-Mite or Evenflo infant car seats should ex- amine the compliance label on the back of the seat. If the model number is 441, 442, 443, 444, 445, 446, 448, 456 or 458 and the date of manufacture falls between March 1, 1985 and February 1, 1989, they can obtain a corrective warning label to place on their seat by contacting: Evenflo Juvenile Furniture Com- pany 11 Bodine Drive Brantford, Ontario N3T.5V7 1-800-265-0749 or any of BCAA’s 16 Service Cen- tres or Technical & Consumer Ad- visory department. Seats made be- fore or after those dates were al- ready labelled with an appropriate warning. “We encourage all owners of these seats to make every effort to obtain their warning labels,”’ says Bob McHugh, technical supervisor of the 500,000 member B.C. Automobile Association. “Even if owners are aware of how to use the restraint safely, there’s always a possibility that the seat could be borrowed or sold to someone who does not know about this change to the installation instructions.” Tune-ups are necessary WHETHER [ET be for medical at- tention or car repairs, the ability to diagnose accurately is vitally im- portant.
