VANCOUVER, 980-7715 , Count Franco Luxardo, head of the Italian family that has for gen- erations produced the interna- tionally popular Sambuca liqueur for fun and profit, recently visited the locally popular Cross to receive an official presentation from pub owners Dave Raht and Ron Slinger. The count and the Cross, a West Coast Sambuca mecca, have forg- ed a strong relationship over the ears based on mutal admiration lor the medicinal powers of the anise-flavored liqueur. Italian Coffee, a recipe combin- ing Sambuca, Tia Maria, coffee, whipped cream and grated lico- rice, isa Queens Cross original, whose qualities have earned it a permanent place on the liqueur’s list of recipes that comes on each bottle, And while you are sampling an Italian, don’t forget the Cross’s kitchen. It turns out some of the best and most interesting pub food on the North Shore: Enchilada Santa Fe, for example, features breast of chicken in a mild chili sauce wrapped in a tortilla and topped with two cheeses ($6.95); or fill up on an order of Mrs. Carter's Meatloaf ($5.95), a neighborhood favorite that origi- nates with chef Charles Carter’s mother. Elsewhere on the menu is a wide range of Far East, Far West, Southeast and Southwest grub. Smith wilt perform some dining demos and present recipes from his upcoming cookbook The Frugal Gourmet on Three Ancient Cuisines. Tickets are $7 at the door, but will be available prior to opening day for $4.50 at Canada Safeway stores.
