With performance better than
that of many sports cars. this
aerodynamic, four-door sedan also
sets new standards for comfort and

Its streamlined bows and 377-
horsepower, 3-liire, inline engine
yields speeds on the best track in

celeration, bringing it from zero to
100 km/h in &.1 seconds.

The 30): is the bigger brother
of the P9UE 2.3, the sports sedait
that in its first vear led Mercedes
sales in North America. Sharing
not only its aerodynamic wedge
shape, but its five-fink rear
suspension design, the 30Q0E rides
as well as it handles, which means
exceedingly well.

Safety was a major design con-
sideration. The body structure
combines a strong passenger com-
partment “‘safety cell’ with front
and rear body sections designed to
absorb and redirect crash forces to
reduce the danger to occupants. A

As in) other Mercedes-Benz
models, the fuel tank is located
above the rear axle, away from the
area of rear impacts. The ABS an-
tidlock brake system and SRS Sup-
plemental Restraint System are
standard.

Mercedes-Benz automchiles are
able to trace their lineage back 100
years to their first car, patented by
Carl Benz in 1886. In the interven-
ing century, no Mercedes model
ling has been as successful as the
cars the 30QE replaced.

Known within the company as
the W123 range, it was a series that
included seditins like the 300D
Turbodiesel and 280E, as well as
two-door coupes and station
wagons. All told, more than 2.6
million of these cars were built for
sale in 180 countries following its
production startup ia 1976,

Based on its acceptance in
Europe, where it was sola out in
1986, the 300E is a worthy suc-
cessor. It is joined by a diesel-
powered running mate, the new
300D Turbo with a 1t438-
horsepower, six-cylinder engine.
