Composer | works Hike a Trojan THE SWEET magic of young composer and pianist Jane Trojan’s new music splashes forth from her debut album with the freshness of a North Shore mountain stream. Trojan, who moved to West Vancouver from Australia at the age of five, has expressed her love of Canada and new-found talents in her first album, The Canada Magic Suite, a collection of in- strumental works she both com- posed and performed. Despite being schooled in the traditions of classical piano and having a childhood desire to be a concert pianist, Trojan has pro- duced an album of solo and or- chestrated piano pieces com- municating her love of Canada with listeners of all ages. Fred Stride was responsible for the album’s orchestration. Her classical background and years of practice have given her the technique and talent to produce a high quality product, but it is Tro- jan’s youth and innocence that shine through in her compositions. Canada Magic, the title track, sparkles with a young woman’s innocent love of the natural beauty of her country. r And at age 20 her composition First Waltz still holds the warmth and charm of vouth’s first en- counter with romance, not just fond memories of a long Jost mo- ment. In fact if there could be any complaint about the album, Tro- jan’s work might be considered too warm, too sweet. While enticing, her compositions Tempest and Canada Magic Reflections don't quite command the thunder or raw reality of the raging storm and barren ‘undsa of Canada’s North. This is owing perhaps to her relatively sheltered life, so far restricted to the slopes of the Coast Mountains. With typical humility, Trojan credits much of her success, and the success of her new album to teachers Dr. Daniel Bristow, a per-. former and teacher known con- tinent-wide, and Lee Kum Sing, who teaches at the Vancouver Academy of Music. Bristow, who describes his rela- tionship with Trojan as ‘‘an in- formal friendship about music,” says Trojan’s music is ‘ta poetic blend of past and present in the vibrant enthusiastic sounds of youth that simultaneously reflect an excellent classic background in- geniously set in today’s style.” Trojan says, while Bristow helped her make the decision to make the album, beginning her association with Lee was the turn- ing point in her career.
