HAVE YOU EVER been to sca Billy? Well if you haven't
the North Shore News’ classic nautical competition is the

p:ace to start.

Slated for July 27, the ninth an-
nual running of the North Shore
News Sailing Race, which is co-
sponsored by Sea Wing Sailing
School and CJOR 600 is expressty
designed to be a fun race and is
open to all skippers, their families
and crew regardless of whether
they have sailed competitively or
Hot.

More than just a test of seafar-
ing skills and good old-fashioned
sea doggery, the News sailing
classic was launched on the phi-
losophy that held sailing to be 2
joyous pursuit. It remains 2
nauticial celebration that manages
co steer clear of the overly serious
and unduly competitive.

FRIENDLY COMPETITION

Last year’s race attracted over
80 entrics who raced under
brilliant: skies and 20-knot winds
all in the spirit of seagoing hilarity
and pood-natured competition.

And this year's event,
rescheduled from its historic June
running date to coincide with Van-
couver’s Sea Festival. is expected
to be even bigger.

raced should cut their teeth on this

serious, everyone tries to win, but

The 12-mile race starts at West
Vancouver's Dundarave Pier at 10
a.m. sharp. The race course runs
out to Lighthouse Park, on to the
Point Grey Bell Buoy and finishes
in front of Kitsilano Beach.

AWARDS PRESENTED

The race officially ends at 3
p.m. and is followed by festivities
and an awards presentation at the
Granville Island Ballroom.

Keen competitors will be out to
break the race record of 2:07:55 set
last. year by the 30-foot sloop
Tightrope, skippered by Patrick
Brown.

There are plaques for 20 prize
categories including first to finish,
best display of flags, best-dressed
crew, best bikini, and best bribe
attempt.

Each skipper receives a North
Shore News burgee and a
medallion for participating.

Entry forms are available at the
North Shore News, Sea Wing Sail-
ing School and CJOR 600.

There is a $25 entry fee for each
competing vessel.
