A month ago, the tormer
judge dared to write a col-
umn in the Sun on the sins
of Israel, on how that
perfect country had left
Lebanon in ruins, and on
how the Jewish lobby in the
United States has an arm-
lock on American policy in
the Middle East.

How the Bewley article
got through the Sun’s Ner-
vous Nelly brigade ] don’t
know. There was apparently
much chewing of fingernails.
But run it did. With predict-
able results.

Bewley was denounced as
an anti-Semite. Whether he
will also be bounced remains
to be seen. Every apologist
for Israel took pen in hand
and The Sun ate dirt by
running a picture of Dr.
Goebbels on the letters page,
someone having mentioned
Les and the doctor in the
same breath. It’s a wonder
they didn't run a picture of
me, too, Dr. Collins also
having been mentioned.
Twice.

OK. So a guy sticks his
neck out and people drop
dreck on him. Serves him
right. He should write about
hamburgers, booze, or what
devils the South Africans
are. Nevertheless, one has to
ask a question:

Why is it that any criti-
cism of Israel, or any criti-
cism of Jews or Jewish
organizations, immediately
brings down on the head of
the critic the charge that he
has to be a soul-mate of the
late Adolf Hitler? Are all
Jews above criticism? is
Israel the only state in the
world without a mote in its
eye?

The fact is that Jews are in
politics in a big way, and if
you are in politics you invite
criticism. Politics (and ter-
ror) created the State of
Israel. In the U.S., Jewish
money and Jewish politics
are so effective that
American politicians do for
Israel what they would do

take on the Jewish lobby is
an exercise in danger.
Senator William Fulbright
found that out when he op-
posed Israeli interests.
Enough Jewish money was
poured into Arkansas to
unseat him. Nor is such a
thing uncommon. Earlier
this year the Wall Street
Journal documented the
strategies of the Jewish
PACs, or political action
committees.

“Jewish PACs,"’ stated
the Journal, ‘tare emerging
as one of the most potent
single-issue lobbies in the
U.S." The single issue, of

course, is Israel, and how
Amcrican politicians react to
Israeli demands,

Senator Charles Percy, the
former chairman of the
Senate Foreign Relations
Committee {as Fulbright
was) fell victim to the Jewish
PAC assault. So did several
other politicians. In Canada,
meanwhile, it was pressure
from Jewish organizations
that gave birth to the ex-
ecrable “hate laws’? and
other threats to free speech.

There is nothing conspira-
torial about all this, and the
Jews are just as entitled to
be a pressure group as
anyone else is. The dif-

ference is that anyone who

to be damned as an anti-
Semite, as Bewley has been
(not to mention my humble
self). It is an OK kind of
McCarthysim.

The drivel that is written
on ‘anti-Semitism’ boggles
the mind. William Nicholls,
apologist for Israel, pro-
fessor of religious studies at
UBC and a Bewley detrac-
tor, makes the dippy state-
ment that the new. ‘‘anti-
Semitism™’ may portend a
new Holocaust.

Only a professor could
peddle crap fike that.
