THE REMAINS of a 1906 logger’s cabin and a contemporary cube with a

sharp skylit roofline are the architectural extremes blended to distinguish
this weekend’s feature home.

Design architects Marna and Riccardo Sammarco have taken the popular
European approach to architecture — combining old with the new. When
they began the project, they decided to retain important basics lke the orig
inal wood floors and ceilings, the old-fashioned framed windows and the

brick fireplace. But they also wanted more room and more contemporary
design, so they added a whole new wing.
