A8 - Wednesday, August 22, 1984 - North Shore News Relax, doc, Brits dying out! OME COLUMNISTS make a point of never replying to readers’ comments. My old buddy Alan Fotheringham is one of them. He believes in dropping the bomb and ignoring the effects. Democratic Doug, however, repudiates such ar- tistocratic practices, and believes that critics are entitl- ed toa reply, especially when they ask for one. On Aug. 12, a letter ap- peared on this page from Dr. W.H. Ross of West Van- couver, who had these points to make: ‘It as with deep concern that I read how native I[n- dians, visible minorities from India and Asia, and Jews, are interfering with Collins’ perception of what kind of country Canada should be. It’s a shame that these Cana- dians are ruining his day, and, almost certainly, caus- ing him sleepless nights. ‘““One segment of Cana- dian society which = has escaped his critical analysis are the post-war Anglo- Saxon immigrants from the United Kingdom. It is with great anticipation that I await his scrutiny of this minority group.”’ I'm glad you asked that question, doctor. If the Limeys worry you, rest easy. In Canada. they are a dying breed. In 1952, the year I touched down on these shores, 47,871 others arrived from the U.K. I have never come across any of them, however, because the British, unlike some that I could. name, have no lobbying ‘“‘ethnic associations’’ and are never to be seen at Ot- tawa’s door howling for privileges, denouncing the 4a country as ‘‘racist’’, running up and down the streets bear- ing placards, culting up one another with swords, shooting up courtrooms, or farting in public. Also, they do not sponsor hordes of relatives, and only Eee get this straight Doug Collins rarely try to come in illegally (unlike some I could men- tion.) Not only that, but they speak English, sort of. Which means they are not a burden on school taxes. As I was saying, doc, British immigration — Euro- pean too, for that matter — is now a moribund morsel, thanks to Trudeau & Co. and BEACH CHAIR &CARRY-ALL Reg. *19°*° NOW $4 3° Lightweight. strong folding frame Use asa back -rast or as a mat plus carry your essentials from tennis racquet to towels Easy to use — goes anywhere 4 colours Reg se oneyenaneaneie ne was ache AY 19 95 the gutless twerps of other parties who failed to oppose them. It reached its peak in 1957, when 109,000 came in. After 1968 it started a steep decline, dropping to 11,801 by 1978. About 16,000 were allowed in from the U.K. in 1982, the last year for which figures are available, but the figures are deceptive, because many East Indians and similar sorts now come in that way. While the British have been kept out, business has been brisk with Asia, the West In- dies, Africa, etc. In 1980, for instance, 71,453 Asiatics came in. That was 5O per cent of total immigration for that year. Altogether, ‘non- tradiuonal’’ immigration for 1980 was 63 per cent. It has now probably reached 70 per cent or more. So clap hands. There are some things about British immigrants that are nothing to write home about, as they say. One thinks of Joe Davidson, erstwhile leader of the Cana- dian Umion of Post Office Workers, who. shouted, *‘Bugger the public'’’ when CUPW was on strike. There are other examples. But take courage, Mr. Davidson 1s no longer with us, he having re- emigrated to his native Glasgow. According to you, | don't like the Jews. But I have never written anything about the Jews as such. I have writ- ten about the Canadian Jewish Congress, which is a menace to free speech. But that no more shows a dislike of Jews than it would be anti- British to criticize Maggie Thatcher. Too many of them are arrogant, violent, and culturally unassimilable. It was a Sikh who killed three people in a Toronto courtroom. As for our own Indians, | like them but wish they’d get off their bums a bit more. Finally, don’t worry about my sleep. If | ever have trou- ble that way, I'll ask you for a pill.
