District council Monday approved a $46 million budget of which $33.5 million will be spent by the municipality and $12.5 million will be collected on behalf of other government agencies. Mayor Derrick Humphreys said he was ‘exceedingly pro- ud’’ of the new budget which will result in a $30 increase for the average taxpayer. ‘*West Vancouver residents continue to enjoy one of the lowest tax rates compared to value across Canada and the whole of North America,’’ the mayor said. City wants lower rate ‘IF THE Provincial Government is determined to balance its budget on our parking lot, they’re not going to be able to do it if it is empty,’’ said Alder- man Dana Taylor at the May 7 meeting of North Vancouver City Council. By MAUREEN CURTIS Taylor spoke in favor of a motion proposed by Alder- man Frank Marcino that Council should petition the B.C. government to lower the cost of parking at the new North Wancouver Court - house parking lot. The rate at the lot is $1 an hour, which ts causing court - house visitors to seen free parking in the streets of the surrounding neighborhood. The result has been numerous complaints and petitions to the City from residents. “It’s a mice big lot, but nobody uses it because the person in Victoria that decides the rates thinks he's in downtown Vancouver,’ Marcino charged. Marcino felt that the park- ing rate should be com- parable to the rates in the rest of North Vancouver City. Property and Licensing Director F. Morris, told Council that the B.C. Building Corporation has so far reyected all such appeals, but Mayor Jack Loucks sug- gested that the City send a letter anyway.
