Dear Editor: . Is the’provincial govern- ment trying to weasel out of its responsibility to prevent logging on Grouse Moup- tain? Judging by the Minister's reply to our District Coun- cil’s request for help that is the only conclusion anybody can come to. The area on Grouse is presently zoned recreation and open space. Under this zoning, logging is, generally speaking, not a permitted use. But, because it is not mentioned specifically, our Council deemed it advisable to amend the existing zoning bylaw to do precisely that, i.e. prohibit logging. The problem with this totally foolproof and, theo- retically, Grouse Mountain Resorts could challenge it. It is for this reason that we ap- pealed to the provincial government to back us up by putting a stop to the logging. They can do that very easily under the Protection of the Environment Act, to men- tion just one possibility. But, judging from the Minister's reply, he has no intention of doing anything. The situation is even more incredulous when you con- sider that the Minister con- cluded that proper logging constitutes no danger, when a study done by an indepen- dent consultant shows the very opposite. Beds for genuinely ill Dear Editor: The concer by Lions Gate Hospital and Dr. Marlene Hunter about the growing number of repeat abortions at the hospital is shared by many in the com- munity. As well as focussing on educational remedies, however, surely it is time to consider the effect of a per- missive abortion policy at LGH on the present scan- dalous situation. This policy has undoubtedly contributed to the increase in repeat abortions and to _ the emergence of the casually ir- responsible attitude towards birth control that has so disturbed hospital authorities. . In a time of financial crisis in the health care system, is it not vital that we secure what dollars there are for those who are genuinely ill? Ross Labrie President North Shore Pro-Life Thanks, Pageant folk! Dear Editor: I would like to convey my most heartful thanks to all sponsors, donors, judges, of- ficials and interested parties involved with the Miss North Shore Pageant. Without them this pageant could not have been the success that it was, nor could it even have been possible. God bless you all. (Mrs.) Gerti Todd Association Coordinator Job sharing the answer Dear Editor: What is the reaction on the street to a reduced work week as a job creator? I feel that the situation should be brought to the attention of the public. A big step in solving our unemployment problem is a shorter work weck. A reduc- tion in our work week to 36 hours could create a job for every nine people working. That is an [1% increase in yobs. An 11% increase in * Replace plugs, points, “condenser,” tuet and air fitter * Test compression. « Complete electronic engine anatysin. \ (“Except electronic ignition.) wages would be needed to bring wages up to the 40 hour level. A 5'4% incre. in wages and a 5'‘A% redu tion in gross would be a con- cession from both employer and employee. So let’s stand and be counted. Will you give four hours of your 40 to help create jobs? Let’s see how many have the conviction to stand up, rather than pass the buck! John Tennant North Vancouver bylaw is. that it is still not hospital beds and™ But the most curious state- ment by the Minister is his inference that the provincial government is powerless. This is the most difficult to swallow. The Minister ob- viously has nothing but con- tempt for the intelligence of the people on the North Shore. This is a Minister of a government which has just introduced legislation which will nullify some of the most sacred and hard-won rights of the people of British Col- umbia — legislation which it is pushing through with the force of a ramshaft. : And yet this government is - now trying to tell us that they have to back off from a developer who thinks he can Clothing by Ron Zalko Active Wear 736 Marine Dr. N. 2am er GENUINE EIGNGIEs hold a community up for ransom. And where do the three newly elected MLAs stand on this vital issue? So far, we haven't heard very much from them. I think the peo- ple of the North Shore are entitled to some kind of Statement from them, followed up by positive ac- tion. Surely they haven't for- gotten that the election took place only three months ago and that they promised to uphold the interests of the people of the North Shore.
