B11 - Wednesday, February 23, 1983 - North Shore News A look at a nostalgic Home Show The big Vancouver Home and Garden Show opens its 10-day run Friday, February 25 at the PNE with more exhibitors and more free features than ever before. While floor space for this largest of consumer shows has been sold out the past several years, the return to use of the renovated Showmart Building and the introduction of exhibits into the Agrodome account for the significantly larger numbers. The 1983 edition of the Home and Garden Show, subthemed Nostalgia, will be housed in the North Forum, Food, Showmart, Rollerland and Agrodome buildings. To combat the = flat economy, aggressive marketing will be the common thread amongst ra = J ir) \.34 eww Ye x ai cross Over the exhibitors who will be showing home products from luxurious room settings to bon-bons to nuts and everything in between. “Many of our exhibitors will be offering new products along with some _ great bargains,"" says Rosalie Schmidt, who manages the Home and Garden Show for Southex Exhibitions. “They are all optomistic about 1983 retail sales and are using the show to kick They feel that the tried and true combination of reduced prices and new products will attract even the most hard- nosed of consumers.” A major exhibitor who specializes in jacuzzis and swim pools agrees. “There'll be bargains like you’ve never seen before. We'll be telling people that now is the time to buy, when the economy is just starting on its upswing.” Features this year are a mix of the popular oddities along with the new. On the show stage, Woodward's fashions will be interspersed with spoofs by the firefighters. Albee’s home fashion sewing and Mary Kay cosmetics demon- strations. Also back are do-it- yourself shows, UBC Botanical Garden with its new theme of food vegetables, landscaping by B.C. Nursery Trades Association, Minter Gar- dens and Shoppers Market Place. The architectural adivsory service returns after a one- year hiatus. B.C. Hydro’'s comprehensive energy display, featuring the K-car powered by natural gas, is all new. So is the old-fashioned general store which fits into the Nostalgia theme. Clowns at Kiddies Kapers provide a respite for both children and their parents: also among the new are candy-making classes by UBC and Minter Gardens, energy experts from B.C. Hydro with their computer printouts, swim and pool water chemistry experts from Quality Pools and do- it-yourselfers on interior decor, home wiring, bathroom renovation, rec room building and skylight and window installation. Showtimes are 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. weeknights, 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Satur- days, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. Adult admission 1s $4.50, children under 12 when accompanied by an adult 50 cents, and chiidren under six free. Special admission for senior citizens is $3.50 weeknights only.
