In spite of the holidays — and perhaps BECAUSE of them — Ive a lot of questions from readers. One reader has a problem I'm sure most of us would love to have! DEAR BARBARA: My husband is the manager of a family-owned firm and has held his position for 20 years. He loves his job and - even in the current recession everything is going well. The owners of the firm had a Christmas party for the staff in mid-December and my husband was singled-out for great praise especialy because there have been no lay-offs or pay reductions etc. The owners took my husband aside and gave him an envelope containing two tickets to Hawaii and a hotel voucher for two weeks. Now comes the problem! We'd love to go but neither of us has ever flown before and although I'm willing to give it a try, my husband is terrified. He is afraid to tell anyone and afraid to stay home for fear the owners think he's ungrateful for the -gift. Any suggestions? trayel- wise b Barba ra McCreadie Co ANSWER: First let me tell you that I'm perhaps the biggest white-knuckle traveller in Canada! Take- offs and landings leave me wet-handed and shaky. Once I'm in up in the air it's OK as long as we dont bounce around. The one flight that bothers me the least is the Wan- couver-Honolulu route for a number of reasons. It's generally a smooth flight because’ there re no mountains to cross and the air is generally better over water. The atmosphere aboard Hawati-bound flights is great! Everyone is happy to be escaping winter and the crews like the run. Perhaps your husband could see his doctor and get a mild tranquilizer. Have hfm test the effects a couple of tumes before he departs and adjust the dosage to perhaps even half a tablet if ; it works. No alcohol, of course! The other option might be to have a stuff drink just before departure but take it easy. Who needs him so tranquil that he can't func- tion? I hope vou decide to “risk” if because two weeks in the islands will give you a new lease on life. If you find you can't, [m= sure the owners will understand and be willing to exchange the gift for cash. If worst comes to worst, let him blame the whole problem on vou DEAR BARBARA: My husband got slightly loaded at a party and before I could do anything about it, agreed to take a two-week holiday with .a couple ! positively can't stand! There's no way to back out and he thinks I'm being unreasonable. How can I cope with this to minimize the agony? ANSWER: Someone is being unreasonable but it isn’t you! Anyone who can’t find a way to get out of boozy promises is a jerk. If you must “grin and bear it”, at least try for com- pletely separate ac- commodation. Demand TWO one-bedroom condos instead of one large one. Get together over lunch with the other wife. Who ‘knows? She might be just as hesitant about the arrangements as you are. A firm set of ground rules is essential for any travelling couples, especially ones who aren't related. Insist on time to do your own thing and decide how bills in restaurants will be split and paid. Try to anticipate any sources of trouble before they begin — I suspect that you might be wise to have a 15 - Wednesday, December 29, 1982 - North Shore News They'd love to go to Hawaii but... gentle talk with your husband about the things he takes on while peering through the bottom of a giass. Good luck! Be glad it's only two weeks, not the rest of your life. Oddly enough. I was just reading the previous letter when the phone rang. The lady caller hada problem so similar to the one above that we had a good laugh over il. In this case, her husband was cold sober when he invited his mother to accompany them to Mexico for their winter holiday. Relations between wife and mother-in- law were never all that good but worse since the recent Passing of father-in-law (not to the cemetery but to the secretary!) We spend a great deal of money when we decide to travel. It is unfortunate when you pay to have a rotten time. Travel com- panions should be chosen -with the same care that youd take if you |. were loaning the other people the same amoGnt of money. There are basically two kinds of people — “loners” and “groupies”. The two don't function well together. Personal habits that may gripe you slightly at home turn into disasters when you're in Tokyo. Little things like poor table manners are a slight annoyance if you share the odd-meal with someone but try doing three meals a day with someone’ who chews with their mouth open and gargles their soup. If I should ever consider travelling with someone outside of my own family I'd take care not to lock myself so firmly into the arrangements that 1 couldn't get out at any time. Think about it.
