When Mayor Jack
Loucks opens the
Special Presentation
Exhibition of the
collection of 70
paintings and drawings
by the late Fred Amess
on Wednesday, Oc-
tober 13 in the civic
Centre Gallery, it will
be a memorable oc-
casion for the many
people whose artistic
lives were shaped by
this remarkable man.

Fred Amess, a North
Vancouver resident and a
former Principal of the
Vancouver School of Art,
was a driving force in the
‘community and a constant
source of inspiration to his
students and fellow artists.

He always took the time to
discuss ideas. and to provide
encouragement to artists

both young and old. Whole -_
generations of art students ~

felt the touch of his in-
spiration. Even a short list of.
his former Vancouver
School of Art students reads

like a page from a’ Who's ee

Who in Canadian Art...Brian
-Fisher, Reg. Holmes, Rudy
Kovach, Larry Kristmanson,
Jim MacDonald, Elmore
Ozard and hundreds more.

Besides being a _ won-
derfully warm and_ witty
man, he taught his students
the importance of town
planning and the preser-
vation of good architecture
and heritage in the cities. He
was also a founding member
of the Vancouver = Arts
Council.

He guided his students
through the great changes in
the Art world at that time
and made the Vancouver
School of Art a creative
haven where these changes

could take place.

Even . with his respon-

sibilities as an administrator.

he still found time for his
own work. he had studied
under F.H. Varley and C.H.
Scott, and The Rhymer
School of Art in London and
graduated at 20 from the
Vancouver School of Art
and at 21 had his first work
hung in the National
Gallery, Ottawa.

He had many shows in the
Vancouver Art Gallery,
B.C. House London,
Junknown Exhibition and

the Bau-Xi Gallery, and had ©
in the H. Mortimer.
