Dazzling duplication of costs Dear Editor: In a recent survey by Jack Davis big government was considered the greatest threat by the majority. I don't believe any government, provincial or federal, are innocent of this offence in Canada. Like a cancerous growth government programs just grow and grow with very IMtle consideration of ef- ficiency or cost to the taxpayer. There is one example I would lke to cite which Started very innocently. It came home from school - under the heading “Captain Click program”. It was sponsored by ICBC (the I Can't Bear It Corporation). The idea was to encourage children to wear their seat belts which seems reasonable until one looks at the highly moralizing and emotional approach posters which read “Dear Grandma, my friend Tommy got killed today. The driver was drunk” done in a child's handwriting. Or the page in the coloring book with a MORE LETTERS ON PAGE A9 Enjoying our heritage news Dear Editor: We have been receiving the North Shore News since it began and have enjoyed it. We read especially news of City council, St. Paul's Indian Church, Old Houses and Pioneers like the story on the daughter of John Lawson and her stove house. The North Shore Heritage Advisory Council will be making recommendations soon for designation of heritage buildings. Also whatever happened to the illegal suites hassle that George Alexander wrote about in your issue of Oct. 13, 1976? My wife reminds me there was a referendum in the City recently and the verdict was in favour of legalising the illegal suites. David C. To my amazement it was mammoth with curriculum books, animated films, puppets, conferences, etc. The total of the ICBC safety programs in our schools is just over two million dollars! Why should any caring parent object to safety being taught in our schools? I don't but I question why ICBC has such an extensive and ex- pensive program designed {which some school boards have refused) and of which only portions may ‘be used throughout the province. I also question’ the program because already the RCMP (paid with our tax dollars) are in the schools. became of MY letter? Safety Council (which received a B.C. government” grant of $200,000) has an extensive school program as well. Surely it would make more sense and save tax dollars if ail these groups were amalgamated under one umbrella so they would not be duplicating each other? How many other “educational” programs are being presented at huge costs to our school boards and why aren't they questioning the worth, duplication and costs of these programs? If big government is going to be controlled it would seem to me this must begin at the local level.
