A9 - Wednesday, July 28, 1982 - North Shore News aa mailbox EEE EO We're squandering Dear Editor: Your editorial of July 21, 1982 “Non-starter?” made it very clear that you are not aware of a document published by the New Democratic Party MLAs on March 25, 1982 called “Let's Get to Work”. This 26 point programme outlines practical solutions to our present economic problems. As we continue to reel from the effects of high interest rates and hospital cut-backs, bankruptcies and unemployment, I for one have begun to question our priorities. Bnush Columbia is a resource rich province. Will we continue to squander that wealth or “will we finally begin to manage it com- petently? Will we continuc to depend largely on one export market instead of diversifying? Will we continue to export jobs as we export our uncut logs? Will we continue to create Megaprojects with tax payers dollars then export our wealth we concentrated on jobs for our jobless. It ts high time we trained our youth for those future jobs. Let's get our priorities straight Olga Kempo North Vancouver The sta lin | game continues Dear Editor: After 42 months of hedging and stalling, the Socred government has finaly annaqunced which new groups will be funded for the provision of rape crisis services in B.C. We, the Centres of the B.C. Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres were not among those groups to receive government funding. The announcement of the new centres has come 4'2 months after the government promised the people of B.C. “no interruption in services”. During this ume. the B.C. Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres continued and still continues to provide 24 hour crisis lines, medical and legal information and ac- companiment, public speaking engagements and in Vancouver alone. has talked to over 200 women in crisis. The situation in B.C. now is that there are five new rape crisis: centres each being funded individually by the provincial government and four Coalition centres who are continuing to operate and who are not receiving provincial money. There are now two centres in Vancouver, two centres in Terrace and there would have been two centres in Victona, but due to the Socred'’s termination of Coalition funding, the Victoria Rape/ Assault Centre has been forced to close. There is indeed a need for many rape crisis centres in this province — women are being sexually assaulted and beaten in horrifying numbers (one woman is raped every {7 minutes in Canada and 54 cent of per women are beaten by their male part- ners) — however, there are now two: centres in Van- couver while women in Surrey. Port Moody and Coquitlam have nothing in = their vicinity. There are two 0S ge it's no Fish Story! Clearly, the aeeds of women in B.C. are not the main factor when the Socreds decide to provide funding for new centres in these areas. Rather, it would seem that the desire to squeeze out the already existing Coalition centres ts the prime motive here.
