ARSON SUSPECTED IN WV

Marine Drive saw its
second major fire in a
week early Wednesday
morning - this time in
West Vancouver - and

it bore’ disturbing
Similarities to the one
the previous Wed-
nesday in North
Vancouver.

Though the West Van fire
was not of the same
proportions as the North
Van blaze. once again it
involved adjoining Marine
Drive stores. And again the
only probable cause of the
fire which inspectors have
come up with is arson.

Damage caused by the fire
in the 1500 block exceeds
$100,000 and fire inspectors
say insurance on_ the
premises appears inadequate
to pay for reconstruction of
the building.

The fire, which started at
the rear of a cluster of
stores, was spotted shortly
after 2 a.m. by Mitch
Dickson as he was leaving
the Copa West night club.

A total of 24 firefighters
from three West Van
firehalls responded to the
call and arrived to find 50 ft.
high flames leapng through
the roof of the premises.

The fire was mainly
confined to the Pot Shop
pottery store at 1516 Marine
Drive and was brought under
control by firefighters within
half an hour.

sport outfitters at 1518,
suffered considerable smoke
and water damage. The front
door of an adjoining store,
Goodway Shoes, at 1512
was burned and
there was water leakage
through the ceiling. Storage
sheds behind the buildings
were also badly burned.

Although the fire caused
much less damage than the
previous week's blaze in
North Van, at the time it was
fully involved it was a
spectacular sight and its
considered by West Van Fire
Department asa major fire.

As for the cause of the
fire. a fire inspector com-  “™™"
ments: “It is looking
suspicious. We are looking
at arson and it doesn't seem
as if there is .nusch else (it
could be) there.”
