i A10 - Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1981 - North Shore News Ellsworth Dickson Pinball arcades are a centre of con- troversery. Some people feel they contribut to juvenile delinquency while others feel they are a good place for young people to meet and have fun. Today’s question is: “‘Are pinball arcades bad for the community?” Dale Goldstone North Vancouver Personally, I think they are a waste of money. | dont see any harm in arcades if they are properly supervised by a mature person. With arcades, at least we know where the kids are. Gabriel Foschi North Vancouver I don't think very young children should be allowed in arcades. Over 161s OK. He didn’t even attend the hearing itself since githough he had bought a plane ticket to go to Ottawa the court date was moved forward a day. His case was put by his lawyer, Brian Williams, and was supported by the Combines Branch, which maintains that a ban on lawyers advertising is a restrictive trade practice outlawed by the Combines Investigation Act. Jabour is opposed by attornies general from six provinces, who maintain the matter comes under provincial juristuction. and other law societies who back the stand of the B.C. society. Williams is uncertain how his case stacked up against the opposition as is not aware of all the evidence that was given. The Law Society of Quebec and the Attorney General's Department of Quebec have their evidence in French, which Williams had not known was going to occur. The case was the grand finale of a fight which has been before several lower courts since Jabour first advertised his North Shore Neighborhood Legal Clinic when it opened on West 15th Street in North Van early in 1978. The battle began when the B.C. Law Society attempted to discipline Jabour by maintaining he had = con- ducted himself un- professionally by advertising legal services Though law society rules on advertising have since changed, the society still does not permit members to quote their fees which Jabour did at the time The law society benchers sull want to discipline him and have indicated they are looking at suspending him from practicing. uf the ruling poesin their faver Various courts at lower levels have Kisen con tradictory rulings on favor of Jabour as well as the law somaety but the decision by the Supreme Court of Catnads will be the tinal ous Onbe Seplember es alse the tume when another local lawyer CoP RICE PE ROONNE I suhe Elford TEMPORAR ¥ Sytvia Gowans PERMAN' NI DOA OFFICE ASSISTANCE We save you the search voit 140) Wo84) Street Noth Vane ouven 984-0251 who ran afoul of the same law society when he ad- vertised his North Van- couver iegal self-help publishing business, Jack James, will also learn his fate. Like Jabour, James has appeared before the ben- chers on several occasions for disciplinary proceedings. He is currently in trouble because the society says he failed to obey a previous ruling ordering him to dissociate his legal practice in the West End from his booklet outlet - the Law Shoppe. Continuation of an earher hearing against James by the benchers is scheduled for this month. At the earlier hearing the benchers’ ire was raised because they couldn't find a hsting in the _ telephone directory for James’ law practice - only for the Law Shoppe. It has since been pointed out to the law society that his pracuce ts hsted under L for “Law Office of Jack James The”. However, James might still be in trouble since in the Yellow Pages there is no listing for his practice under the heading “Lawyers”. James describes these listings as “inadvertant errors’ and says of the benchers and their action against him: “They are using Decision on lawyers likely this month their powers to protect lawyers’ interests and not the public's.
