AS-Sunday News, November 16, 1980 AT NV DISTRICT COUNCIL Fire centre OK'd By CAROLE STAFFORD The storm of controversy over the site for the new fire training centre subsided into a sprinkle of protest from Alderman Ernie Crist, as North Vancouver District council voted six to one in favor of the Lynnmour location. “I have personally given considerable additional! thought to this matter,” said Mayor Don Bell, “and I am convinced that the assessment cnterna used by staff were correct and that this is a suitable site for the fire training centre.” But Bell acknowledged the traffic and pedestnan safety concerns of area residents, voiced recently at a pubhc hearing. He moved that residents be invited to meet with the District safety committee to work out appropriate solutions — and the motion carried unanimously. Crist suggested that the residents’ safety concerns be settled before council adopted the site but other council members felt the urgency to get on with the project was more important. Council agreed that no matter where they decided to build the centre, residents in the area would protest. “If council can't make a decision,” said Alderman Jim Ball, “Maybe we should let the residents decide where the devil to put the thing — it’s to protect them.” Alderman Gordon Rose said he could understand fire chief Bob MacDonald's frustration (reported in the News last week). "I'm getting frustrated too,” he said. Alderman John Lakes said: “The sooner the centre is established, the greater the public. safety for everyone.” He moved the Lynnmour site be adopted and Crist was the lone dissenter.
