STANDARDS FOR ELECTRICS: Although some
people - like the‘ cartoonist below - still think of electric
vehicles as a joke, they are nevertheles a serious part of
research and development for cars of the future.

The department of energy in the U.S. has set standards for
the electrics. For example, all personal-use electrics must be

_ able to accelerate to 50 kmh in 13.5 seconds or less. be able to

go up a 10-per-cent grade at 25 kmh and have a forward speed
capability of 80 kmh for five minutes.

The electric must also be able to recharge its batteries from
an 80 per cent discharge level in 10 hours, have at least 75 per
cent of its range capability still remaining after 12 months or

trigrade and then being operated, by moving forward under its
own power, at any tem ture within t range without
damage to the vehicle or to people. .

The power plant also has strict standards: the electric
propulsion circuit must be electrically isolated, no battery
material must enter the passenger compartment in a crash,
vehicles with battery vents must have ¢ barriers, and a
positive battery disconnect must be located within reach of
the operator.
