Seniors Games Jan-Christian Sorensen Sports Reporter jsorcnsen@usnews.com DEEP Cove’s Dorothy Bullen is in the swim of things. She’s one of eight Zone 4 paddlers whe will take part in the B.C. Seniors Games in Kelowna starting today, Zone + includes Greater Vancouver and past Squamish up the Sunshine Coast. Bullen, now 87, swam on the Kitsilano High championship relay team back in 1929 at Crystal Pool in Vancouver. She's been doing the backstroke at “the annual provincial Seniors Games since 1988. Bullen said she’s been swimming since the age of three. “We were thrown in while having a bath and we had ro either sink or swim.” She sounded confident as she uained for the games at the Ron Andrews pool in North Vancouver. “Lt don’t like to brag, but J usually come in first,” laughed. This year she'll be travelling to the games with daughter Vendy Stephenson, 35, who'll also hit the pool for Zone 4. Bullen will try her luck in six events: t the 25 and 50m back- stroke and free competitions and the 100 and 400m free com- petition. “Dorothy Bullen is experienced and she can hold her own,” said Denis Crockett, swimming coordinator for Zone 4. Other swimmers competing at the event will be 72-year-old ‘North Vancouver resident and seasoned swimmer Joan Parnell. * Parnell will try her luck in the 50 and 75m backstroke, the 100m breaststroke, backstroke and individual medley and the 25m breaststroke. -Betty. Hamblin, an 82-year-old North Vancouverite, will : compete in the 25, 50 and 100m back and free events. “On the ‘meiy’s side, 81-year-old West Vancouverite Fred - Schulhof will enter the: 25 and 50m backstroke, the 50m free ind the 100m breaststroke and 200m free events. - Crockett himself will also be in competition at the event.
