10 - North Shore News — Wednesday, April 19, 2000 Taxpayer fo Dear Editor: Honeyinoon’s over. Five months into the term of the new city council, we can now officially declare the honeymoon period over. Mayor Sharp has had her picture abundantly displayed in the press, paid for in the main by the hapless taxpayer. Her first act was to give _ herself a $500/month car allowance — enough to lease a Mercedes. Ms. Sharp is a promoter of public transit, I guess for other people. She fives close enough to walk to work, Mayor Sharp's next act was to renovate the mayor's office and washroom. The hapless taxpayer of course foots the nearly $40,000 bill. She didn’t mention this intention during the election campaign. Councillor Bell has asked for a staff report on a bylaw to provide for members of council to have independent legal advice be paid for by the city. He has also expressed his hopes that this woufd apply retroactively to Mayor Sharp's legal bills in detend- ing conflict-of-interest charges in the last election. Sounds a Jot iike Premier Glen’s legal bills being footed MAIL Box: oting bill for Sharp’s honeymoon by the hapless taxpayer dues- o'r it? But then when Bell ran for the NDP nomination in North Van-Lonsdale, none other then Mayor Sharp was his campaign manager. 1 guess those NDP*ers stick together. Once again though the hapless taxpayer gets to foot ¢ bill. What about some tax relief? At least holding the line? Nope. Surprise, surprise — Ms. har surely hope the honey- moon's over -- the hapless taxpayer can’t take much more. Rod Clark North Vancouver Selling NVD land only a ‘quick fix’ Dear Editor: I disagree with Coun. Bill Denault’s position in the April 14 News article where he wants to simply sell the remainder of our district lands in order to “offset tax increases with available resource revenue.” Also, I wholeheartedly support the News Viewpoint of April 2 — and again dis- agree with Coun. Denault — that there was any deceit in the Viewpoint article. The selling-off of our land assets, and the doing away with any consultation or notification for redevelop- ments which increase the height ofa home, i is indeed a “worrying trend.” A policy of selling public land to pay for depreciating capital pro- jects is clearly unsustainable. The: two previous terms of council saw it as such and moved to rid ourselves of this addiction by phasing out the use of Heritage funds (the place where profits from Jand sales 89) for what was essentially “paving our roads.” This was to be the last year that land sale funds were to subsidize our taxes in this sway. The re-introduction of this outmoded policy would be akin to a “quick fix” with even more withdrawal pains for future taxpayers. Land sales shoufd be used only to fund projects which “have a sustaining future value to the community. If council is determined to reduce our taxes I suggest they get tc work, sharpen their pencils, and find other solutions. Corrie Kost North Vancouver AYLORMOTIV BCAA, ADL, LCB.C.
