Starring Breckin Meyer, Seann William Scott, Paulo Costanzo, D.J. Qualls, Tom Green and Amy Smart. THOSE noisy hens strutting around cluck- ing about the lack of artistic merit in movies like Read Trip have short memories. These same critics most likely enjoyed Zapped when it debuted and probably saw Fast Times at Ridgemont High several times. Zapped, for those of you who claim not to have seen it, was that Scote Baio AVillie Aames classic where the lead character gets supernatural powers due to some heavy drug use, then disrobes the entire student body at the prom. In other words, cinema hasn't taken a nose-dive in quality; the need for mindless {and frequently topless) good fun has always been there. Road Trip is actually not as moronic as the trailers make it out to be, and, hal- lelujah, ail the good jokes aren’t given away in a 30-sec- ond commercial spot. The story is simple: While leading a tour of the Ithaca universicy campus, longtime student Barry (Ted Green) gets heckled about how lame his school seems. Barry then proceeds to tell his tour group about the greatest col- lege story ever documented: his buddy’s cross-country road trip. Josh (Breckin Meyer) has been dating Tiffany (Rachel Blanchard) forever, but now they're attending different colleges. When he doesn’t hear from Tiffany for a few days, Josh jumps to the rash conclusion that she’s cheat- ing, and gives in to the verv persuasive charms of Beth (Amy Smart, recently seen on Felicity). His buddies think he’s lying, but Josh has the video- Photo Van Recin AMY Stewart (as Beth) and Breckin Meyer (as Josh) in Road Trip now showing at Esplanade 6 Cinemas. tape to prove it. Too bad his roommate mailed it to Tiffany by mistake. Josh then finds our a death in the family had pre- vented Tiffany from calling, so he sets off'on a frantic three-day, 1,800-mile road tip to intercept the illicit ape. His buddies go with him: ELL. (the immensely likeable Great line up delivered at SeyLynn Hall Seann William Scorn), is all hormones and cheerful manipulation; his roommate Rubin (Paulo Costanza) is 3 brain, but spends most of his dime stoned; and the only rea- son they bring Kyle (10_J. Qualls) along is because he's the one with the car. Qualls is like one of those bendy men, this decade's answer to Robert Carradine’s Lewis Skolnick from Rerenge of the Ne One of the many funny scenes in Road Trip centres around the destruction of Kyle’s parents’ Ford Taurus. (This was even funnier for me, since | borrowed my par- ents’ Taurus to get to the movie.) Another takes place ata sperm bank, where a few of the guys try to make some quick cash. Let's just say thar the nurse's technique to encourage a deposit from 2.L. just mighr start a trend. Anda very funny scene in a women’s focker room employs, but also mocks, the gratuitous nudity in all these pubescent flicks. Animal House, Porky’s, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and even Ferris Bueller's Day Off — Read Trip bor- rows shamelessly from them all, but never takes itself seri- ously. And hey... sometimes that’s what it’s all about. From Page 14 be, free food and drinks sodz) served up by The Lynn Valley Lions Club, a skate and BMX competition, not to mention a great line up of bands. Retrograde were up first, another local act with strong songs, incessant guitars and drive. The Hip Hop Mechanix, churning old schoo! flavour with a new school twist — dope !!!! By A Thread, Thee Pirates and 3 Fly were on the bill, unfortunately 1 had other commitments and couldn’t stay. The Rumble at The Plaza, was aptly named — the sound was awful. Mix Master Mike (Beasties), was the first act I caught. Wow: Nickelback and Bif Naked were the last two acts to per- form at The Rumble. The lighting was crap — back lit and directly in your face, renee of watts coming straight at you (since phot can 01 shoot the firse tO conps, you would think the lighting techs would take into consideration our position, no pun intended — you can’t take a pic, if the light’s in your face. HELLO !!!) Apparently Nickelback are heading south of the border as the band has had quite a bit of attention from the States. old rock and roll. Bif was a little late getting on stage, too bad. I missed Robin Biack and The Intergalactic Rock Stars, at The Penthouse, evidently one of the highlights of the fest. — Sprout NEWS photo Sprout BIF Naked at the Plaza Saturday. _ : VANCOUVER SUN SHOWTIMES* Galapagos Daily: 9pm « Add’! shows: Sat - Mon t1iam, 1:15, 3:30par Michael Jordan to the Max _ Daily: 7, 10pm « Add’! shows: Sat - Mon 2:15, 4:45pm Alaska Daily: 6, 8pm « Add'l shows: Sat - Mon 12pm *SPECIAL HOLIDAY SCHEDULE IN EFFECT! 05/22 Showtimes subject to change without notice.
