IT’S a breezy morning
at Ambleside Beach.
Squamish Chief Simon
Baker is perched on
the hillside, wrapped
up warm, drinking tea
and surveying the
activities of a film crew
on the shoreline.

“It’s cold for May,” says
the Chief, “I remember
when we used to pick
salmonberries all along here
in the spring.”

Down on the beach,
there is a silent calm asa
young man clad only in
shorts and a headband is
crouched at the water's
edge, extending his arms in
an are, as if in prayer and
brushing himself with a
cedar bough. You could
almost forget this was a film
set until the director shouts
“Cut!” and immediately, sev-
eral assistants rush down to
cover the shivering young
man, actor Dakota Housc,
in blankets.

House is performing a éshokwem’ — a
Coast Salish water puritication ceremony —
and it’s being filmed as part of Legends —

The film is directed by
Anni¢ Frazier Henry — a
filmmaker, writer, composer,
and performer of Blackfoot,
Sioux, and French heritage.
She was first told the story
of Siwash Rock by Chief
Baker, who had appeared in
one of her earlier tilms. In
Legends, Andrew is guided
by Baker's narrative, recited
in the Squamish language.
“It’s a little difficult to tell
the story in English,” says
Baker. “I don’t like to read a
script; [like to say what I
know.” The Chiet appears as
an apparition in the film,
against the backdrop of
Siwash Rock —- Frazier
Henry shot him against a
green sereen at North Van’s
Thomas Special Effects.
