The Nintendo generation is producing
a new class of young film-makers.

Todays teens are computer literate and media
savy, making them well suited to jobs in film and
television production, says George Harris.

“Thev have a real advantage in this industry,”
he said. “Kids are digital. Media technology is
totally digital now -— all the editing, all the sound
design work, everything is done on computers.”

Harris is director of the Gulf Islands Film and

Televisicn School (GIFTS) on Galiano Island.
The school offers week-long film-making work-
shops for teens throughout the summer.

On Apri 18 the 230 students who attended
the school in "97 presented their videos at Eye-
Lens Video Fest. The awards night and video
screening was held at the Vogue Theatre on
Granville Street in Vancouver.

This is the fourth vear for the testival. The fes-
tival is an opportunity for industry professionals
to view students’ work, said Harris. North Shore

Film students at home in digital world

Ben Dickson, a Grade 120 student at
Collingwood in West Vancouver, won the Best
Mockumentary award for his seven-minute film
Why An I Watching This Film.

Dickson’s fictional documentary about a

Galiano film-maker who makes films only about
butter took several prizes at the Canadian
International Film and Video Festival in
Campbell River last November, including Best
Entry in Festival, Best Amateur Entry and Best
Amateur Scenario.
