18 — Wednesday, November 19, 1997 — North Shore News Stuck in the middie with Harme IT all started at 11:30 p.m. I was munching on some food and drinking pop, knowing full weil it was going to be a long hard night of trying to get some sleep. The regular late shows were about to start, and I was already bored to tears. Thinking of taking a walk down to the Town Pantry and back, I opted nor to when I saw that Harmony Korine was going to be on the David Letterman Show. Harmony co-directed the controversial film Kids a few years back. Some critics clas- sified the film as “An excuse to put child porn on the big screen.” I thought it was an excellent film which tells the true tale of how teens today are so unaware of the AIDS virus and how fast it’s spreading. As Harmony walked towards Dave Letterman's desk, I happened to notice his clothing: an argyle plaid vest, with a light blue shirt and "skinny tie, khaki pants rolled unevenly inside out at the bottom, no socks and some shiny brown slip-on shoes. I loved his “no style” attitude. Right away, he was all fid- gety and squirming about his seat, and his voice altered from soprano to bass, as he stuttered his way through each sentence. During the interview he mentioned that he wanted to get people ei interested in different types of movies. “I believe that a movie should have a beginning, middle and ending, but just not necessarily in that order,” he said. When Dave asked him if any of the scenes in the movie related to his own life, he said that the scene of the boy in the bathtub cating spaghetti and a chocolate bar and drinking milk related to what he did as a child. He asked Dave if he noticed the bacon taped to the wall. He said that it was his prosthetic. Dave was rather confused. “What?” he said. “It gets me excited,” Harmony replied. I taped the episode and showed it to my Mom the next morning. She said that Harmony reminds her of me. Good or not, Pll take that as a compliment. After seeing that interview my weckend goal was to see Gummo, the low budget independent movie directed by the 23-year-old. My friend Matt and I wanted to go to the $5 matinee, but ended up paying $8 for the 9:30 show. “Wow!,” said Mart, “It’s the guy from Breaker High.” (An imitation Saved by the Bell type show). The movie opened with a montage of wobbly, fuzzy shots of houses and litle’ “hick” gatherings with what sounded like a young boy doing the narration. It was just starting to make me dizzy when it ended with a shot of a dog impaled on a satellite dish on top of a roof. When the picture returned to normal, there was a scene of a boy ona pedestrian walkway over a highway. The boy had a dirty pair of sneakers and a pink hat that was strapped to his head with big Sunny ears. All of a sudden he started to thrash around kicking the fence, spitting at cars and then peeing off the walkway. Gummo, a movie without a plot that is based mainly on characters and specific scenes, has a lot of disturbing footage. The movie takes . place in a small U.S. hick town, 20 years after a devas- tating tornado struck. Two kids ride around with pellet guns and shoot cats, and sell them to the local butcher. The town has a lot of trailer parks, broken-down trucks and cars. One scene which con- fused me was when the boy ITACHI Ultravision Television HiTACH LI 32" ULTRAVISION with bunny ears was walking through an area where there were two young boys dressed up in sheriff uniforms. They were smashing car windows, and then they shot the boy with the pink bunny hat with their cap guns. The boy fell down and pretended he was really shot, and the two boys started to kick him and call him a faggot. They searched his pockets, threw away a shoe and skateboard and left him lying there. A short time later an African-American midget and Harmony, (who acts in the Sust | 9°’ after mail-in rebate! oO; that that made me squirm around in my seat and claw at my skin, but it was worth every little cut and scratch. Some of the shots when they were killing cats looked so real. These scenes made me want to jump into that town and yo on a murderous rampage. You may want to leave the theatre, so don’t go alone and stay for the whole show. It’s worth it! For a very Jow budget film and not big name actors, Gummo said and did every- movie, as he did in Kids) are sitting on a couch. Harmony is incredibly intoxicated and tries to convince his friend to hug and kiss him. My question is — “What’s a gay, African- American doing in a hick town?” Another scene is of a scary looking girl with pale skin, 2 weird smile and yel- low teeth. She was shaving her eyebrows in a mirror. Matt and I just wanted to scream “No!” Instead we just shut our eyes and hoped it would end soon.
