HAVE YOU ever been stressed out? (That's ae SCRESSED out, Dad. Not stretched out.) Stress was invented a few years ago and seems to be ® onc of the most infectious diseases around. Masses of @ people carry it to their doc- tors, their shrinks, and their counsellors. Especially to their counsel- a lors, who have become the layers-on of hands and the mind lozenges of modern cimes. ', What did people do when @ stress was something that ap lied to bridges, planks and er inanimate objects? =~. They called it their wor- “tes, that’s what. But stress is worth more. It can get you ee some money if you tell your :tale well. Or at the very least, a lot of sympathy. Practically everyone is on ithe stress bandwagon now. Canadian “peacekeepers” Jhave marched up to the stress ‘table’and received pay for their stress problems, includ- | mailbox Bother hand ing one guy whose buddies stressed him out, he said, by being nasty to him. Good heavens! After the Gulf War (if you can really count it as a war as far as our forces were con- cerned) there were numerous claims of “post-traumatic : stress.” Last year, I think it was, the Duke of Edinburgh was asked on the telly how the guys who were in the Second World War managed stress. He had been in a navy licutenant who saw action and he said, “We just went home and got on with things.” True. There might have been some stress but it cer- tain}: didn’t become an industry. If you got the shakes you downed a drink Not having much else to do, the UN has i been plug- ging “stress” for years now. “Workplace plague ‘global phenomenon,’ ” was one headline on its work. The University of Manchester has rated all kinds of jobs according to the stres: they give, from postal workers to police officers. Some “experts” say you can ward off stress “by touching one hand witis the other firmly or stroking your arm or cheek to divert your- self.” T wonder whether the aca- demics who did that work began doing things like that. Wouldn’t surprise me. It takes all kinds to make a world. Convicts in the U.K. who claimed to have suffered stress during a prison rict didn’t bether with that sort of thing. They said the riot changed their personalities ‘councillor says thanks @ for another ‘tinee-year term.
