fortunate to have the opportuni-
ty to display this wonderful col-
lection of arts fram the circum-
polar regions of the world.

[t has just arrived from Victoria,
where it was on display during the
Commonwealth Games,

Also the long awaited opening of
the ‘Artists For Kids Gallery came
about atthe same time as a result of
this fine show.

Not only do the school children
have a chance to visit this new
gallery, but it is open to the public
Saturdays and Sundays from [2 to 4
p.m. until Saturday, Dec, 17.

My classes took their sketch-
books with them and chose a
favorite piece to illustrate. | decided
to sketch a Saami woman’s hat and
purse, from Lovozero, Murmansk,
Siberia. .

This show of the world’s
Northern peoples is quite remark-
able, because for the first time in his-
tory, peoples from the participating
nations of the United States
(Alaska), Canada, Greenland,
Russia, and Sami (Scandinavia)
have banded together to work as a
Northern artistic cultural entity.

The 89 pieces of two and three
dimensional works on display are
only one-fifth of the total exhibition
of this Polar Art. Similar exhibitions
are currently touring Scandinavia,
Russia, Greenland, and Alaska.

On view are examples of their art
in the disciplines of sculpture, carv-
ing, painting, drawing, printmaking,
weaving, basketry, and sewing.

Their contemporary works illus-
trate the deep respect for nature,
farnily, and cultural values, that the
northern ‘peoples have, and shows
that art from the Arctic regions is not.
