THE VINTAGE YEARS NOVEMBER IS not high in our favorite-month-of- the-year polls, teetering between outright winter and sullen preparation for same. But for us Seniors it has a big, bright spot, because it’s the time for declaration of the winner of the B.C. Senior of ‘The Year award. The Brock House Saciety initiated this recognition of out- . standing grown-ups eleven years ago, and the gold medal they had struck for winners comes with the added fillip of 10 thousand dollars extended to each recipient by the HongKong Bank. Both ladies and gentlemen have been honored with the award, all of them the kind of people who find the best of life lies in contribution of them- selves. They have come from all areas of the province, nominat- ed by members of their own communities. This year there were 60-odd names to choose from. Heck of a job, and overseen by the Honorable Nathan Nemetz. The panel that makes the final deci- - sion looks for the people who fit what they describe as: “the movers, the doers, the starters and the provers.” The rules of the game say ‘these movers and doers must be 65 or older, Canadian citizens : and have a record of voluntary _ Service to their communities. You can’t nominate yourself, ‘and no fair suggesting a couple —-to each his own in this draw. - With the introduction in place, it is a pleasure to present _ the man who led the field this year. His name is Peter Wing. _ His home is in Kamloops, - where he was born. He is in his 81st year, and when he became Mayor of his hometown in 1971 it was the first time in North America that a person of Chinese origin had achieved that distinction. He describes his youth in Kamloops, his schooling, as nothing spectacu- _ lar. There was a bother some year of illness when he would otherwise have been taking Grade 10, and then a commer- cial course before he went into his father’s grocery store. In 1932, he married Kim - Kwong, who was a Revelstoke girl, and from then on he began - to build a career of being a very lively-minded citizen. Kamloops was a nice small town in those days, and he could have spent his years as most of us do, getting along, tending to our own affairs. But that’s not Peter Wing's style. He bought an orchard in the forties, and that got him interested in the B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association, to the extent that ultimately he became a director. Likewise the B.C. Fruit Processors. When he sold the orchard to subdividers, he discovered a latent talent for the real estate business, an exercise he pursued until his retirement. Retirement from Peter Wing Real Estate, yes, but it might more likely be called “Retirement into the - World.” He had, all through his busi- ness life, been working over- time for his city and his province, and was also involved in many of the service organiza- tions. Now he could go at it fullbore. He’s been a Rotarian for 52 years, and was local pres- ident during 1976 and ‘77. He's an Honorary Life Member of the Kamloops Board of Trade. For five years he acted as an alderman for the city, and for the five years following that he took on the role of mayor. All of us old-timers have made our contributions to soci- ety, and given time to causes we espoused, but Peter Wing has turned it into an art form. He’s: served as president of the Okanagan Municipal Association, president of the Union of B.C Municipalities, vice president of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities, and as a Director of the B.C. Automobile Association. He’s now a Life Member of most of those bodies. He was Governor of Canada’s Jaycees for 1972. The Queen gave him her Jubilee Medal in 1977, the same year that he received the Human Relations Award from the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. The City of Kamloops made him a Freeman - ’ Nature’s Mineral! VEGESIL® 90, 180 & 360 capsules. Nature's Mineral!
