for Big Brothers of Greater Van-

According to TBS, cosmetics
and their ingredients are tested for
two main factors, skin irritation
and eye irritation. A mumber of
animal tests are still used:

TBS uses the following testing
methods to assure the safety of its
products.

@ Comprehensive data base ex-
aminations assess new ingredients
and formulations.

@ In-vitro, literally, in glass, tests
use cells in a culture dish. For ex-
ample, the eyetex system tests for
eye irritancy by injecting protein
culture in a test tube to duplicate
the cornea’s reaction to irritants.
@ Scientifically proven. mathemat-
ical models, computer analysis
and imaging techniques are also
used to predict reactions.

e@ TBS tests low toxicity and sen-
sitvity substances on human vol-
unteers at the University Hospital
of Wales, as well as on staff vol-
unteers.
