ith a family motto like ‘‘We gladly feast on those
who would subdue'us,”” you know that this isn’t

exactly the Waltons.

Their ancestors were witches,
maniacs and mad-dog killers. The
family cemetery in Gomez and
. Morticia Addams’ (Raul Julia, An-
gelica Houston) backyard cradles
the remains of those illustrious pi-
oneers and also serves as an ideal
playground for the children,
Pugsley and Wednesday (Jimmy
Workman, Christina Ricci).

Yes, it's Charles Addam’s
macabre brood, the Addams Fami-
ly, sticking pins in American con-
formity. The looming butler, Lurch -
(Carel Struycken), Granny Frump
Qudith Malina), the nimble-
fingered Thing ‘(Christophe r Hart)
and walking hairball Cousin Itt
(ohn Franklin) — the coven’s all
here. Well, almost. Fester is miss-
in:

Bauch to Gomez’ guilt, the
brothers fell out 25 years ago and
the bald-headed ghoul has never
darkened their gloomy mansion
since. Except that on this perfectiy
stormy night, Fester (Christopher
Lloyd) makes a sudden return from
the Bermuda Triangle. Or is it a
greedy lookalike named Gordon
plotting to break into the Addams
vault?

It’s not exactly the strongest of
plots, but that’s to be expected.
The film-makers based the script
on the 1,300-0dd New Yorker car-
toons, resulting in a string of one-
liners and sight gags.

However, the dialogue is grimly
droll and the visual jokes are fun-
ny, even hilarious, especially
when the family is kicked from
hearth and tomb to face a world of
schoo! pageants and job applica-
tions.

Although the adults are well
cast, Ricci as the woeful Wednes-

day has the best scenes, utilizing
creative methods to exterminate
her brother, undev their parents’
careful supervision. (Whatever
their faults, this is a family that
practises commitment.)

There are improvements over
the mid-’60s show, (although Julia
and Houston are no john Astin
and Carolyn Jones) with a lush
waltzing score and humorously
detailed gothic sets.

Clever special effects liberate
Thing from his familiar box allow-
ing him to scamoer about and
lend a hand in rescuing Morticia.

Although the film deesn’t quite
hold together, moving in fits and
Starts, individual moments are so
well delivered, they bring the
mavie to life, if you'll pardon the
expression.

But his poor parenting skills fead
him to ruin — that, combined with
his countless indiscretions and lav-
ish squandering of the family for-
tune.

This is not only one of the most
gorgeous color films ever made,
especially in the newly remastered
laserdisc, it also features a terrific
duel, nearly motionless, but
agorizingly tense.
