North Shore municipalities are proclaiming the week Mental Handicap Awareness Week. Approximately 600 canvassers will be knocking on doors during the week to solicit funds for the association. Said NSAMH_ resource devel- opment coordinator and door-to- door fundraising campaign orga- nizer Pamela MacDonaid, ‘‘The door-to-door campaign is crucial to fund our adult services pro- gram. It completely funds the adult support component of the client services department.’ While government funding sup- ports the association’s residential and family-support programs, the adult services program requires the community support. “St provides personal support, By Michael Becker News Reporter advocacy, counselling. The form it takes is basically whatever the in- dividual needs — _ vocational, educational, recreational, legal, whatever,’” MacDonald added. The adult services program serves 815 adults. But there is a waiting list of at least 100 more individuals seeking help. But said MacDonald, ‘Our mandate is such that we have to serve people who cail us in an emergency. Emergency situations, such as an emotional crisis or a financial crisis, take precedence. A director and two adult counsellors juggle their time to provide immediate assistance. “What happens eventually is that people burn out, so they have cut down the caseloads of these peo- ple,”” MacDonald said. Last year the door-to-door campaign raised about $58,000. Members of the public will be able to identify NSAMH_ can- vassers: they will carry a kit in- cluding a receipt book with an of- ficial charitable tax number, NSAMH brochures and an ID tag. The association was founded in 1956 when a small group of con- cerned parents banded together with the hope and purpose of im- proving the quality of life of their mentally handicapped sons and daughters.
